Starting to look to replace my 04 150 and the V10 250/350 trucks are catching my eye. Any known issues with this engine or trans? I use it primarily to tow a 8000 pound fifth wheel and a 30' inline snowmobile trailer. Maybe 5-7K miles a year. Looking at used...probably 03-04
Reliability = 6.8L Triton v-10. Look it up! My 10er has gone 176k trouble free miles and assessments are that it will easily break 300k without sweating. The 10 burner is the epitome of reliability, easy maintenence, and engine longevity. It does help that when you plant your foot in one you get sucked back into your seat and immediately get a BSEG! The 03-04 range were the last of the 4r100 trannied 10's... I would try if you could to get an early 05 nd get the 5r110 torqshift tranny... it makes the 10 even more amazing. You will not be dissappointed! I regularly yank 8-11k lbs. around with ease and sometimes pull a triple axle double deck toy hauler that weighs in at 15k lbs. It is able, and willing!
by 03 they had any problems they had with them fixed mainly blowing out spark plugs. go with Biggziff advice and go with an 05 better tranny and more power.
I was surprised at how reasonable they seem to be especially when compared to the diesels I have been looking at. Just talked to a friend with an 02 350 v10 with 125K on it and no problems to date. Looks like a V10 will be my next ride. Not that I won't get a big smile when I tell all my buddies I have a V10 under the hood...heeehehe
I recommend an 03' V10. I picked mine up a month ago for $13,900 from a dealer in VT with 70,000 miles. You can't beat that price for a crew cab F-250. The V10's are cheap these days. You just gotta look around. I did have to have one of the manifolds repaired. Broken studs, which is common with the V10's. Good luck.
