i have a 97 f250 4x4, 5.4 liter. dont know what tranny i have but all i know is about 75% of the time it runs like a champ. Then about 25% of the time when it shifts it slams from gear to gear like a really hard shift. Hot, cold out of nowhere it will just start doing it and stop doing it. Fluids are fine. I am running 35's on a 3" rancho lift could they have finally taken their toll on something? I just want to address it before something severe happens.
servicing the tranny. if you dont know its real easy to do. i dont want to insult your intelligence but you loosin all the bolts in the tranny pan and then let them out further in a single corner as to let it drop more so the fluid can drain out. then finally drop the whole pan. change the filter some are held on by a screw but i think yours just pops in there. scrape the pan from the old gasket and use a little gasket maker notice i said a little to hold the new gasket in place while putting the pan back on the tranny then just bolt it back up and add fluid and that should take care of it
yeah i know but i have also read people in here servicing trannys and they go out in 500 miles or so just figured if the problem was something more complex i could address it but i'll drop the fluid and filter then post back my results...thanks
Not 100% positive if you can do it on your tranny, but i drained the torque convertor on mine when I changed the oil last too. That way you get most of the oil out, not just a few quarts.
The harsh shifting is due to a either loss of computer control of the EPC line pressure (faulty EPC solenoid) or the computer has intentionally maxed out EPC line pressure (fail-safe mode) due a detected internal fault (ie, overtemp, incorrect gear ratio, or TC slip ratio). If the computer commanded failsafe, you should also have a flashing O/D light on the shift column. If so, you need to get the codes read.
A good transmission shop can properly diagnose the tranny.
I have a 97 F150 4.6 with a 4r70w tranny with 198,552 on the truck. Lately it seems to be that the 2-3 shift is getting somewhat soft form what it used to be. I did have the filter changed when I bought the truck at 170k. I know it is due for a filter change, i am also wondering if i should have the converter drained and see what that does. The thing that gets me is that it doesn't do it all the time when it shifts, sometimes it feel firm and other times it can't even be felt.
The cheap scanners used at most parts stores cannot read manufacturer-specific fault codes that are usually present or stored when there is a flashing OD light.
Don't want to steal this thread but a friend of mine has the flashing O/D column on his 98 Expy 5.4. I was curious as to what ProjectSHO89 had mentioned earlier. My friends tranny vibrates while the light is flashing -vs- hard shifts and has no codes at the moment. Any ideas?
Thanks.
