Is there any danger to the engine if the 8 quarts is too much?

There could be, yes. With cavitation (air bubbles) comes bare metal exposure.

If you're at or even slightly over the full line, which I have been several times, (not my fault-another reason I like doing my own), you'll more than likely be fine.

I am such a perfectionist so from now on I will be doing my own oil changes.
