Bad breaks?

I have a 2000 f150xlt. Bought it new 2 years ago and now it has about 32000 miles on it, mostly normal city driving. Recently the front tires are making lots of noise when i push the break. I think the break pads are going bad. Is it normal to replace breaks after this short time? Will the warranty of under 36000 miles cover it or i have to get new pads? Thanks for your help.

Bad breaks?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Jan-02 AT 10:41 AM (EST)]Well, the City driving is not helping the problem.
Todays Brake pads have alot of metalic flakes in them to reduce the dusting that comes off of them. Ofcourse I can't tell from all of the alloy wheels I see on other vehicles which are black..
Anyway, These pads do crystalize or glaze over and then they start making alot of noise. probably should have them changed.
Probably not covered under your warranty..

Bad breaks?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Jan-02 AT 11:15 AM (EST)]Hello, before you take the truck in for a brake job try this on which ever side you hear the noise:
Inspect the pads for wear, new they have about a 1/2 inch of actual pad surface and shouldn't make a wear warning noise until they get down to about to about 1/8 inch. You can see how much of the pad is left easily with the tire off. Now (pad permitting) you can use a sanding disk or sand paper to remove any glazing from the pads and the rotor.
The reason I suggest the “de-glazing” is that it looks like you are averaging 15,000 miles a year city driving which is about the same as I run and my brakes didn’t require replacing until about 58,000 miles.
But all people drive different and it is not out of the question that you may have worn down the brakes to the point of needing replacement, however, with today’s prices it is worth a inspection before spending your money and Dealers do not warranty wear items.

Hey, i own a 2000 F150 with about 45,000 klm and just had to replace the front pads... unfortunatly there not covered by warrenty because there a normal maintenence item. If you get the work done at Ford then it should roughly cost you $140... and the pads are garenteed for life... Have them looked at because rotors for the new F150's are real pricy !!

Bad breaks?

The mention of the Lifetime pads from Ford reminded me of something. Raybestos makes a line of pads that carries a lifetime warrenty. When I was workling for a major auto parts chain we would give you new pads when you brought in your old ones if they had the warrenty and you had a receipt. The pads only cast about $50 USD max...somethig to think about if you prefer to do them yourself.

If you have them installed by a qualifies mechanic they will be covered that is if you installed them yourself they tell you straight up they wont give you other pads.... i've had this happen before in this area i cant find any product or store that sells "real" lifetime warrenty break pads i hate payin a shop to do work i could do most everyone does but in this day and age its harder and harder to work on these newere trucks you gotta have Toddler hands to fit in some places !

Bad breaks?

got new pads with 34k. down to nothing, couldnt believe it. goodyear was gonna do them for 150 but couldnt get in while having new rim put on. thought ford could not be much more. the charged me 450 bucks for front brakes. the new rotors were 80 bucks. pricy job. should of asked how much it was gonna cost. big deal if it is a lifetime warrenty on brakepads if the labor kills u.:-X23

Post Bad breaks?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Mar-02 AT 06:41 PM (EST)]Needing to replace the brakes at 32k would not be unheard of...it all depends on your driving. I'd recommend pulling the wheel and inspecting the thickness of the remaining pad (as suggested in an earlier response) before taking in for service. Knowing the condition of the pads would at least let you know if the shop is being straight with you.

If the pads have been damaged due to glazing, here's my opinion:

1) Replace the pads. You've already gotten 32k out of them, if you're going to work on it, put it back together with quality parts. New pads are cheap compared to the potential costs of a brake failure.

2) Make a serious effort to determine the cause of the glazing. Were they overheated from excessive towing or an enthusiastic driving style (we've all been there!)? If not, you should ensure the rest of the brake system, (i.e., calipers), is in good shape and not keeping the brakes from releasing as they should, else you'll smoke the new pads just as quickly as the old ones.

Hopping off my soapbox...FYI, I replaced the brakes on my '97 F-150 4x4 at 40k last spring. I had plenty of pad & shoe left, but a shoe on the right rear was contaminated (rustproofing material) and caused the wheel to lock up occasionally. So, I replaced the brakes all the way around for about $150, including having the drums and rotors turned, and flushing the hydraulic system. It's true that most of the cost for repairs is for labor, but if you're not comfortable doing it yourself, the money would be well spent.

Good luck, I hope this helps.

if you do determine that you need new brakes i would definately do them yourself. just buy the haynes automotive book at autozone or something and it will tell absoutely everything needed to replace your brakes. mechanically it is not that difficult to replace the front brakes. and it will be so much cheaper. if you have any specific questions im pretty familiar with brakes. good luck.

Lots of places advertise "Lifetime Warranty" on brake jobs. Only problem is, when you go back, they sell you new hardware, seals etc. to get back some of that money.

Just like Midas mufflers. Go back for a muffler under warranty, you get billed for new clamps, hangers and probably a pipe.
