wiper switch issues

hey everybody, i just got a 1990 F250 extended cab with a 7.5L and the last owner mentioned a wiper issue. on low speed the wipers are unreliable (i turned them to low and nothing happened) on high they work just fine. he replaced the switch with a Standard brand and still no change. is this a common issue? hitting the washer button the washer works but the wiper arms dont do a thing.

Yes this is in fact a common issue. For some reason the combo switches (wipers, lights, sprayer) were not designed in a way that made them last over the years. I know that my brother replaced his with a 3rd party brand and it works great, but I have also read a tutorial on how to clean your current one and make it work perfectly; I think it may have been on ford-trucks.com. You're not alone

Mine acted funny on low speed the other day.....didn't want to work....turned them off and on a few times and they did start working.......sounds like mine need some cleaning too......I think the article said the end cap comes off and you can get inside to clean it. I don't remember what was recommended to clean it with.......so I'll have to find the thread.
Good Luck

the only problem with that link is that a 90 does not have a multi function switch on the column, it has a plain old wiper switch in the dash.
the switch is not the problem. you need a wiper delay control module. it is behind the dash, mounted somewhere near the wiper switch to the dash frame.

If anyone does have the multifunction switch and is having problems, I went to the link noted by Scandocious above, did the procedure and now everything is fine with the wipers. That is some good information.

To get the wiper delay governor, pull the dash panel, remove the switch assembly(along with the light switch). Under the dash, where the parking brake assembly bolts to the dash frame, there is a small bolt right next to the parking brake bolt. That is the one holding the wiper delay governor in place. Remove it and the little box will slide out from where the switch was. Be careful, don't drop it! It may be repairable.

My delay module had 3 bad solder joints.........I repaired those and a few others that looked suspect.......works fine now for several months.
