Potentially sounds like a plugged fuel filter. Does it restart? Is it noisier than normal? is there a MIL? How quickly does it start when cold, and after a warm restart.

it starts fine cold or warm but if it dies while driving which it only does if it is not warm then it is hard to start i have to crank on it for a while and after a little blue smoke it starts idles and runs a little rough but once it warms up you would never know there was a problem. sorry i am not sure what is a MIL

There is absolutly no information in your first post about your truck.
Assuming it's the 99-03 PSD the first thing I would do is change the oil. Yes it sounds strange but these beasts are extremely dependant on the proper oil and it needs to be fresh, not all worn out and sheared down.

In my case in one ocassion was the air filter clogged. The second time after a year I had to change my fuel filter, the racal filter and the motor oil and added a fuel additive and the problem is gone.
