i gave my buddy a tow today with my old 91 F.150 4x4. he was taking his truck put a new motor in it and the old one gave out. I had to pull him up a large hill, a 6% grade for a mile or so, he doesnt like ford, he was mad that i just happened to be passing by when it happened, so i stop, get the strap out and we start going up the hill, im in 2 HI going up the hill, im pulling him pretty good so i start getting the feeling that i am starting to really pull a load, it was him being a d**k holding the brakes, so i have my hubs unlocked, so i stop, put it in nuetral and put it into 4 low, put it in 1st and drug him up the road, these motors make a lot of good torque in 4 low, by the way, this is a 80s chevy 1500 4x4 with the 350 boat anchor 8 foot bed, cap, it probably has some weight over me, anyway, i just showed him that you do not mess with a ford guy thats offers to give you some help
ha ha, looks like everyone towed someone today i feel left out i didnt get to pull anyone LOL... that had to get him good, a ford pulling his chevy... hope non his chevy buddies seen yall LOL
Yeah most of my buddies don't like Fords either, they would not have anything that doesn't have a V8. They always give me a hard time for having an inline six in a fullsize truck. They think I should put a "real motor" in my truck, you can't get much more truck like than a 300.
Yeah lets see a V-configured engine of comparable CID take off from a dead stop in 4th gear/high range at 800 rpm... I can do it with my truck! I think those guys think inline sixes are junk because Chevy didn't make one that could run with the 300 Ford. But they are still insistant that Chevy is superior in every way to Ford... huh! ignorance of some people! Just because it doesn't rip and roar and make a bunch of noise doesn't make it junk... it's a critter of a different species for one purpose, work.
Dadgum it, I want my own story. I love going through the forum just reading about these engines. I love my I6. It hasn't let me down yet- other than the alternator going out after I hit 200k miles. it still runs like new. Ya'll say the 300 doesn't move too fast, and it doesn't, but I'll say this.. when I've had to floor it on the rare occasion, my baby will pick up and fly!
A friend of mine who is a diehard bowtie fan used my old beater truck for a few days while the transfer case was being rebuilt on his chevy.
He didn't come back a Ford fan, but he did return with a lot of respect for the 300 six. In fact, it was him who talked me out of swapping the 300 in my project truck for a 302. I was having a crazy moment and he brought me back down to earth.
we just got nailed with a storm up in newengland and a buddy of mine couldnt get his honda civic up his steep driveway in the snow. so who does he call up? the kid with the ford 300 and a 4 speed granny. i go over and hook up a toe rope to his car put my baby in 4L and crawled up that driveway like i was cruisin down the highway. there was about 4 inches of snow on the ground and i didnt spin at all probly cuzz im runnin 35-12.5 BFGoodrich A/T's. this was the 1st time i really have gotten to see the power this engine has. and i loved the feeling of towin my friends import up and snowy incline with no problem at all. i love this engine.
Shame on you, I would of backed up enough to unload the pull strap, unhooked, rolled up and left the POS chebbie on the road and drove off.
Now the old 292 Chebbie 6 was one great motor as well the 250 back in the 60's.
As one that has had Ramblers, Javelin's & AMX's, Stooge's in the late 60's, Chryslers of the mid 60's, chebbie trucks late 60's and now a FE from the late 60's I have been around. Tried many brands so there isn't a bashing thing against one brand, still testing 68 & 69 FE trucks at over the million mile mark.
Back in the late 60's they were all good trucks, today I wouldn't give $100 for new plastic. JMO's.
well fellas i'm a owner of both a bowtie and oval ...but the other day my oval was at the mercy of my bowtie ..my wife volunteered to pull me home.. i just couln"t take the harsh remarkes and limped it home @25 mph for 30 miles
I don't care I have been on both ends of a towstrap! If it's mechanical and or has moving parts something has to fail eventually... it's just the way it goes sometimes.

Exactly! What differs between the brands is this; Which one will last the longest doing the most work?
Although more times than not I have been the guy pulling a stuck or broken vehicle back to civilization... amazing how far a little maintenance goes eh!
