I'm sure that all of us are familiar with the clicking sound of the ac compressor kicking in when the temp **** is turned to the cold setting and ac/max ac mode is selected. My question is I still hear the compressor clicking on/off when the selector **** is turned to any of the right side **** selections,(bi-level,floor vent, defrost/floor vent or defrost mode. I kind of understand it clicking on when using any selection where defrost is involved but don't understand why the compressor would be activating when in bi-level or floor mode. It doesn't seem to do this if u move the temp **** from cold to warmer. Does this sound like normal operation?????????
You should check your manual, it is explained there. For my 1999, AC operates in the settings for Panel & Floor, Floor & Defrost, and Defrost. AC does not operate in the Vent and Floor settings.

My 2004 does the exact same.
I'd sure like to be able to engage and disable the compressor in any mode, except defrost.

Yes, I agree....an AC on/off switch would be nice. I like the vent-floor combo but often do not want the added load of the compressor. I also would like an air recirculation switch (to prevent outside air from coming in).
From what I can see across all the years, Ford really has not done anything to enhance the HVAC system on the Ranger.....it looks like the same controls since early 90s are still used in the new trucks today.
