You have a bad fuel delivery module in the front tank, it has a either a bad check or shuttle valve.
This is a common problem and most of the time you will run fine while staying on the front unit as the pump is OK and both valves are open while it is pumping.
I have an 87' and I was just setting down to write about this same question. I noticed fuel running out of my front tank. When I took the cap off, it was actually pushing gas out.

On an 87 you have either a bad fuel pump in the rear tank or a stuck "O" ring in the fuel selector valve.
A bad fuel pump in the rear tank would be inoperative or putting out low pressure (it takes about 4 psi to switch the selector valve). Could be bad wiring, dash switch, pump itself or plugged up stock.
The "O" ring sticking is from non-use from the truck setting for a long time or the driver not switching tanks for a long time period and then switching tanks.
Hey thanks subford. I just bought this truck a few weeks ago and he was having some fuel related problems. He put a fuel filter on and said his mechanic buddy said thats all it needed. He also said that he never used the front tank. I filled it up and switch to the front after I bought it but it didn't run as well on the front. Then I switched it to the back and it started running just fine. I did add seafoam to both tanks. How hard is it to fix this O ring?
P.S. I changed it back to the front tank this afternoon and it seems to have quit pushing the gas out.

Reason: P.S.

i have an 88 that i just bought that has been sitting for about 3 years. when you first start it, it will run fine for 15 minutes then lose fuel pressure and die. when its running it has about 32 psi then it suddenly drops to around 10 psi. when it dies it acts just like if it were out of gas. i've already changed the external fuel pump, (on the framerail) the filter, pressure regulator, and fuel pump relay and none of this fixed it. the other day i had it running and it died after only about 10 minutes so i figured it was out of gas, i switched tanks and it ran again so i'm pretty sure that tank was out of gas. now today i tried it on both tanks and it runs on either tank so it seems to have gotten some gas from somewhere?? the switching valve is about the only thing left that i haven't changed, do you think it could be the problem? i would think it would either work or it wouldn't rather than work for 15 minutes then suddenly quit. what do you think?
I think your socks in both tanks need cleaning.
The selector valve does have a reservoir in it and if the in tank pumps filled it and then you started the engine you may run fine on the fuel in the reservoir. But if you are not getting enough gas from the tank it would empty the reservoir and you would have your problem in a little while.
All the selector valve does is line up the supply and return lines from the tank to the engine.
