My truck came from the factory with Mercon V fluid in the tranny. When I had the tranny flushed and filter changed before they used Mercon V.
I am pretty sure this is a factory synthetic. Is there another fluid I can use this weekend when I just change the filter? The Mercon V can be hard to find. I was reading the back of the bottles at the auto parts store yesterday and the Mobil synthetic tranny fluid said it was able to be mixed with Mercon V. Is this true?
I did some reading and discovered that Mercon sp is synthetic, not Mercon V. So, what is so special about Mercon V? Most auto part stores I go to just have Mercon III.
The key is finding a store that just doesn't have "parts cashiers", in other words, employees who are clueless about the products they sell.
You might try your local NAPA store, or a "Mom & Pop" independant Auto Parts store if you have one near you. They are a diing breed, and I miss those those stores. A place where you used to be able to go into. The parts man would walk up to you. You'd show him the part you needed, and he would turn around and come back with the exact part 30 seconds later. When you needed one widget, and you only had to buy one widgit. Not 10 widgits in a blister pack, as you do today at the chain stores.
Anyway, try your independent shops for Mercon V fluid. I see it everywhere in my area, including housebrand (Napa, Carquest) Aamco trans fluid (Which is made by ExxonMobil).
My local Pep-boys guy told me I had to get Mercon V from a dealer. The local auto-zone didn't have any on the shelf. I need to try better stores.
Thanks for the info on what Mercon V is though.
I have been having a terible time finding enough fluid to do a change on my E4OD without having it shipped. I finally found an AutoZone with Coastal Mercon III in gallon jugs. Every AutoZone, Wal-Mart and Advance Auto Parts I go into has a different selection for tranny fluid and few stock enough on the shelves to do more than a top-off. I am sure if you keep shopping you will find it.
For some reason these places usually have a full display of Type F in various quantities and brands, but hardly any Mercon III or V. When was the last time a Type F spec tranny was even sold on a vehicle?
