I am wanting to pull the egr valve and clean it. My truck has 12K on it. I realize that their are instructions in the tech folder on how to do it, but not being a mechanic i need to know if there are things i need to specifically do, not do, if there are certain parts that cant get wet, etc. I really want to do it myself because i am sure the dealer would charge an aarm and a leg.
with 12k i wouldnt touch it....if you run good fuel with additive and the right oil you are supose to you should be fine....egrs can be cleaned although i never cleaned any of mine just replaced them if they acted up....
To remove: unplug the electrical connector; twist the EGR valve so the mounting tabs are off of the tapped mounting pad threaded boss of the manifold; I use two (about six inch long) minature "wonder" pry bars to lift the egr valve by prying between the manifold and EGR mounting tabs.
I don't know if it is in the above link but I recall it being suggested to use a shop vacuum to vacuum the manifold after you remove the EGR. I also recall one of the mechanics indicating that it is possible for the particles to get under a valve and create a no start or hard start situation but if you let it set long enough the valve will eventually close and the engine start.
I removed the EGR on my 04 and had to manually shut the stuck valve to get the truck to start once..... then off to the dealer....
I really think with the later programming strategy that there are fewer problems with the EGR; ULSD should also help; and the use of a diesel fuel additive likewise should help. The occassional 'pedal to the metal' will also help to blow out any soot that may have built up.
