Whats wrong with my window?

I have power windows on my truck.. and the driver window doesnt work.. when I hit the button you can hear the motor running but it doesnt bring the window down right.. it kind of drops down into the door.. then I push up and it doesnt do anything (but the motor does run).. But if I manually pull the window up and push the button it will lock the window up and doesnt come down. Does it sound like the gear is stripped or something??

would that fix it if it is the gear

Yes, sounds like stripped gears. The motor is turning but there aren't teeth on the gears so there's nothing to grab the window gear.

I would think that that ebay item would do the trick but you'll probably want to take off your door panel first and be sure its a stripped gear, and that the part on ebay is the exact one you need. Good luck.

Some parts stores are now carrying those in their "help" section.

I wonder if that is easier to do than replacing the entire regulator. It would be nice if these sellers would put the install instructions in their ads so you could see what it entails. Either way you have to get inside the door....but if you can change that gear without removing the regulator it will definitely save time and work.
Anyone ever done this? Is it a common fix?
Good Luck

Yes it's a common problem and it has been covered here on several occasions before. A search may turn up some instructions and maybe even a few pics. Usually the 3 small rollers inside the gearbox disintegrate, cleaning out the bits and replacing these is all that''s needed. You have to drill out the door panel with a 1/2" bit and remove 3 bolts holding the motor/gearbox on the regulator, or you could pull the window glass and remove the whole regulator assembly, but that involves drilling out some rivets as well. Either way it's not hugh job and the replacement rollers can be found on Ebay for as little as $0.99.

Yup, easy to fix, costs ~$40 at advance auto to get the rebuild kit for the regulator.
