i just bought a 1991 rangerSTX..reg cab, 2.9L 5 speed 4x4. its a clean truck for being in ohio all its life.
it sat for a year before i bought it. i fixed it up, tune up, oil, many other misc little things. hoses, belts, etc. it still ticks slightly. when i changed the oil it was FULL of gasoline. now, you start up and drive its fine.. but when it heats up to reg temperaturethe check engine light comes on (will get scanned) but the oil pressure fluctuates. when i drive it seems to be fine but when it idles its bad. the other day it dropped REALLY low and actually died. i checked the dipstick and it reads over full, it smells of gas
any ideas of how gas could be mixing with the oil? the gaskets seem to be fine, doesnt smoke. doesnt leak any fluids for 224k miles. i understand this motor has a lot of wear and tear but id just like to know how gas could be mixing with the oil and if i can fix it to get a few years of service
Sounds Like the fuel pressure regulator is bad. With the engine off pull the vacuum line off the regulator and see if it is wet with gas. That would explain chek engine light also.
You do need to change oil again after replacement. Make sure you use a Motorcraft oil filter.
I wouldn't drive much with that much gas in the oil.
yes i was told that my injectors could be messed up? i didnt think to check the regulator, i will later today when i get out of school. if theres any other suggestions for me im here for another 40 mins
I wouldn't think it is injectors -- When the regulator goes bad gas gets sucked through the vacuum lines and gives you a RICH run condition Enough to contaminate the oil.
Just make sure you lube the O-Ring on the new regulator before installing or it will be a PITA to get seated and will mess up the o-ring.
