Sorry, I dont know if I can post this sort of thing here but I was pointed in this general direction by a Senior member. I have an overheat problem and what I mean by that is my truck starts up fine, cranks up nice... first try. But once the motor gets hot it dies. Iv'e replaced the ignition switch, the module which was originally a Duraspark II but now is stock shucks module. Ive replaced the ignition coil, all the wires, the cap, the rotor, all the plugs(gapped perfectly) the oil filter and oil, the fuel pump and half the wiring harness. I pulled the distributor out yesterday because someone told me to do a timing light test and now it wont even start at all. It has power but no crank at all anymore because of my dumb head. Im not a mechanic by any means but if someone in this chapter could take a look at it I have money and I'll even buy you some beer. This is a farm truck and I need it for horse hay and garbage dump runs. PLEASE someone help me!
Sounds like the hall effect pickup in the distributor was the original problem. The one in my 350 did the same thing. Either take it in and have the pickup replaced or buy a replacement distributor. You'll have to retime the distributor and then do base timing to get bit going again. It's not to bad but you'll need a book to tell you how to do it. The no crank is another story. Try to back track what you disconnected.
Is it the pickup coil in the distributor? And I'll need a timing light right? Oh, btw the way... thanks for the welcome. It cranked great until i pulled the distributor and then it started f'ing up... now it misfires.

Is there someone that can come to Spanaway around here? I'll pay you for your time, buy you some beer and whatever else you want. Sorry for that, but this is a farm truck and I need to pick up hay for the horses and dump trash.
Wish I could, but I can't get out that way until this weekend.
Those distributors aren't a hall effect, they're a magnetic reluctor pickup, and that's a pretty common set of symptoms for a bad pickup coil.
I would just go ahead and get a rebuilt distributor, and put it in.
If it can wait till this weekend, I could probably come out and give you a hand with it. If not, I can PM you my number and walk you through it. You will need a timing light to set it properly.
Welcome oneminizut! You're 3-4 hours from me, depending on that nasty Seattle traffic.
You've done a lot of work on it already and you're in good hands with Ford_Six, but you'll need to buy a book (Haynes, Chiltons, etc) anyway for future repairs and might as well start with something sort of easy, like replacing your distributor. Be sure to MARK the orientation of the old one when you pull it out to align the replacement correctly, if we're talking replacing the whole shaft/assembly.
Could you make a "signature" (click on "User CP" near the top of the forum page) and put in the basics of your truck?
Then we can see what Ford you're talking about
. EDIT: Nevermind, I see you are narrowing down the problem to the ignition system in another post. And you say " 83' f250 with the 5.8L 351 " in the narrative.}
Um... I didnt know what I was really doing and I pulled the distributor already a couple days ago. (Plus I was drinking which doesn't help). Now I put it back in because I didn't know it had to be aligned a proper way. The truck wont start period now and I was wondering if I'm going to have to purchase a timing light? Is that how you put them back in? I REALLY screwed up. I really don't want to spend the money on a mechanic. Can I still fix this. Also I don't know if I posted in this part of the forum but the wiring is totally screwed from the previous owner... I mean its like worthless. I can't find good wiring at local junkyards and someone mentioned an HEI? I mean, originally(before i screwed up the distributor) I was starting to think it was the wiring. Now I have two or more problems. Yay me!
Oh, and if I didn't post it here in the Washington chapter I have repalced the ignition coil, the module, all wires (sparkplug wires?) to the distributor, new cap, new rotor, all new plugs gapped perfectly, new ignition switch and pulled out all the emissions wires because they werent hooked to anything anyways. Its got an Edelbrock carburetor which I really dont understand with all the zoom zooms and wham whams on it. New fuel pump, new fuel filter. New oil filter, new oil. All oil levels check out. Some idiot wired the washer fluid resevoir to the radiotor but I guess it works good. Wiring is al *****.
You've done a lot of work already. At first we all have been guilty of throwing parts at a problem until we learn to diagnose it first. Just part of the mechanical learning process
I won't get in the way of the advice coming in your other thread for solutions to this, because the posters there are better mechs than me.
But where you currently are in the trouble-shooting, you will have to get the #1 cylinder to TDC and re-seat your distributor shaft before anything else; like arctic y block and others are saying. Then move on to the real problem that is apparently in the ignition system.
Motors are a *beach* sometimes, just start at realigning the distributor shaft and then work from there with the excellent advice in the other thread.
When the repairs get beyond me, or aren't spelled out in the repair manuals, I bite the expensive bullet and take it to a shop of the best mechanic on the island here. (Dave Williams at the "76 Gas and Marine" station in Freeland.
Ok, Im still trying to hit top dead center. Friggn thing is pissing me off.(sorry) Yes the motor is a *beach* but actually the motor is a beauty, its all the work the last guy put into it I have to repair. I might check out Freeland. I really wanted to do this myself but I think I'm doing more damage than good. I have a repair manual but not all the right tools. I'm getting a little perturbed by my lack of knowledge, tools and hands on help. I REALLY need hands on help I think, but I don't know anyone here. BTW, thanks ALOT RexB. Also, does that dozer run thats behind your truck in the picture? I wish I had one out here on my property for all the skotch-broom. Nice ramp trailer too.

Check you other thread bud as I just posted there. Hope it helps. Trying to See if I can get my brother in law to come up from Shelton as he is a mechanic for the Troopers and a heck of a nice guy for one who drives a Dodge Diesel.
I've had a change in my schedule, I can come over any time this week after work. I ge tout of work at 4:30 in Tacoma, so I'm already most of the way to you.
If you PM me your address, I can swing by after work tomorrow or Wednesday. I have a timing light and all that.
