Hey, My brother has a 86 F-150 that he bought brand new in 86, has a 351 HO with Holley 4bbl. problem is his distrubitor is stuck. He tried several yrs. back to adjust the timing and the dist. wouldn't move has been running it for several yrs. with the bolt loose and has never moved. Anyway do any of you know any secrets for getting it loose!! Thanks.Sammy.
Mine (5.0 EFI) has a hex on it and I use an adjustable wrench to loosen it up. Mark where it's at, and with the engine warm but off wiggle it back and forth. It shouldn't take much pressure. Once it moves, put it back on the mark and start the truck. Adjust timing and lock down.
Have you ever had to remove a very, very hard screw to turn and you found it helped to turn it back in again....in, out, in, out...works like a champ. Same goes with difficult dizzys. Don't know about the Ford but my Pontiacs dizzy housing that fits through the hole barely fit through the hole. I guess years of grime and a little corrosion makes it a wider diameter.
My cousin has a 79 f250 with a 400 and the distibutor was seized a month later of trying every method and spray possible no luck. it was welded in . get a big hammer and chisel. careful not to smash your fingers.
FYI Just yesterday we did the styrafome cup test that pb claims on the can compared too the zep brand twister that we use. the twister melted through the cup in 1 min 19sec the pb took 4min to run through the cup. by this time twister had melted the bottom inch off of the cup while pb still had bottom of cup vissible. no comparison in my opinion.
FWIW...
I had a frozen distributer on my 1972 Torino. It took a lot of work to get it free, but I finally got it out. I had the same problem. It would not move up, down, left, or right. I bought a rebuilt distributer ($49) at my local auto parts store the next day after soaking mine with KROIL overnight. It finally did work loose after about an hour of tapping and prying. I never damaged the distributer housing, but I did not re-use it once I got it out. The car had a minor water leak, I suppose for several years, that caused the distributer flange to rust all the way down to the "o" ring seal. So I fixed the water leak and installed the rebuilt distributer.
i had the smae problem woth a 78 400. couldnt get the distributer to turn or move. buit i was stripping the block down to rebuild. i ended up beating the hell out the distributer. i finnally got it out in pieces. not highly recommended unless rebuild or last resort
