I would much rather see Yellow under the hood than a Red one. I still have this crazy idea of stuffing a 3406B mechanical engine (14.6 liters, twice of the PSD) in the framerails of a f-350. At my tech center school we tore down a test engine (tore down every year by students, 17 years old), and then mic'd and rebuilt it, and then dynoed it. Stock was 310hp and with a bone stock engine and some fuel pump "adjustments" to the torque rise and max high idle fuel, and we cranked out 559hp and pegged the dyno at 2000lb ft with 800* post turbo EGT's. I have pics of it. Those things are AWESOME.
You think powerstroke parts are expensive just wait till it repair time on a cat. They dont break often but when they do they break big.
True, but I gotta good friend who works on CAT engine at a big dealer in NC, and he said CAT marks up like crazy, dealer cost for cat parts is about 50% of cost. And just imagine, who else has one and who else could make the *** out of that thing without dumping a fortune into it. I want a C9, I been wanting one ever since I seen the C9 my friend had in his loader. It had tripped the hour meter over twice with only a blown gasket to show for it. BIG C9 with MASSIVE TORQUE. With alittle tuning and mods I sure 1000 hp and 2500 FtLbs is plenty possible. The brave new world of CATs in a SuperDuty Frame.I gotta go to the bathroom for a few minutes now!
That looks like the engine in our tactical military trucks (2 1/2 and/or 5 ton) -- do you know if it is?? They are Cats, but I'm not sure if it's that one or not. I have a buddy in my unit that used to work for Cat and is always talking crap about them.
But I have to tell you this story... The Cat guy and co-driver were bringing some (HEAVY!!) equipment back from the field in July in North Texas (probably over 100 degrees) and they heard a weird noise. He figured he'd just watch the gauges and keep driving. 30 miles later, the temp gauge suddenly pegged and the engine locked up almost immediately. Apparently, a coolant line went but they didn't smell anything for some reason. I figured they'd smell it, and when they saw what happened, they couldn't figure out why they didn't either. Anyway, that engine ran perfectly for almost 30 miles with no coolant in the heat of the Dallas summer pulling a huge load. He always tells people he now knows exactly how long a Cat will run with no coolant.
They are torqy enuff for a tooth broken off a timing gear to break the front cover. A long weekend I would rather forget $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Its an in frame repair but thats because the only thing left on was the frame.
Caterpillar makes their own automatic transmissions, or you can get a manual. The CX28 is usually used in the c9s through c13's, and the c15 compound (the 625hp version) use a CX31. try pushing one of those rearends around on the floor, i could use the ring gear as a belt!
My dads old kenworth had a 3406B, 425hp version, that was an impressive motor. His got rebuilt somewere around a million miles, and foolishly enough, he told stories of being loaded to 80k gross, and pulling 90+mph. I dreamed of putting one of those in my old 84 chevy, I just want that in any pickup, with the drivetrain to take it.
Exactly, CAT's engines are hard to kill if you follow the maintenance sched. buy a tee. I was talking to a army Vietnam vet who had a tank hauler truck and had a big CAT in it, he said viet-cong hit his with a land mine and it blew a hole in the radiator and the oil pan, he drove 30 miles to get away and the truck had ran out of oil and coolant. He then patched the radiator with a oily sock and a stick, he patched the oil pan with a rock and and piece of rubber. He drove it 200 more miles the whole time hearing the rattle of the shrapnel in the oil pan with his tank still on back. Find me a cummins or an engine story that good and I will kiss your ***.
There was an article i read somewhere about a SD that got ambushed in iraq, they shot holes in everything, everyone was injured and the truck drove 5 miles back to base with holes in the block and tranny. It quit right when he pulled in, and yup it was international power.

YOU MEAN IT ACTUALLY DROVE ITSELF BACK?? Sound like someone is going to be kissing someone's @$$!!!
