I used to be one of those die hard brand name people. Nobody could ever touch the brand i thought was supreme, and most of that is from my raising. What dad taught me, what we worked on, what we owned. Ive since grown out of that phase. Some people never will. Nobody makes the perfect truck, and whether most of us want to admit it or not, they are becoming more, and more alike. Especially were it counts, (drivetrain). Besides the occaisional corporate axle, such as the sterling rear, which in the big 3, is the only one corporate axle left, besides gms ifs center section, all axles are made by DANA/Spicer, and AAM. (american axle manufacturing) Transfer cases, are all made by either borg warner, or more commonly new venture gear/ new process. The manual transmissions, are the same, way, all accross the board. The only real difference between current model trucks drive train, is the motor anymore. Nobody really makes the rest of the drive train, and when it comes down to it, the manufacturers dont even make their diesel motors. Ford buys international, Chevy buys isuzu, Dodge buys cummins. Its all outsourced. When you go to improve "your" truck, it doesnt matter what brand it came out of. When you are building your truck, you are the manufacturer, or remanufacturer. Why put anything less then the best parts? Or the more cost effective solution, or just to be different, yet still in a positive way. If the cummins is the easy to make power, reliability, and simplicity, then whats the problem? I hate to hear it when people say oh its a dodge part, or oh its a chevy part, or oh its a ford part, why would i "cross breed". Maybe because its a better part then what came on your truck, and it just happen to come on a truck manufactured by someone else. That manufacturer didnt even make the part, they outsourced it. A dana 80, is a dana 80, is a dana 80, it doesnt matter if it came out of a chevrolet, ford or dodge, when you get a dana 80, you got one. So you want to get rid of the sterling rear, and put in a bigger/tougher one for towing, or whatever use does it really matter were it came from? Lets say your PSD motor finaly croaks, which sounds like it takes a long time, as people have shown 1/2 a mil plus miles, and you dont want to spend 10k on a new one, because you have a line on a 6bt, from a bread truck, for 1000, and you got the time to do the work it. Sure seems the cost effective way to me, and its a great motor, there no loss. UNLESS, your a die hard "purifist" that says, no, im too proud to do something that makes sense, and is functional. Ill just drop the 10k to show my pride. Im sorry for those of you who ill offend in this post, i guess im just tired of the one and only brand name attitude. Sometimes each manufacturer did NOT use what could be the ultimate part. They built their vehicle for the general public, i mean ford made the 74 pinto for God's sake, chevy made the chevette, and dodge, made some things that were rusting on the show room floor. Like i said, sorry to those i offend, but that is just what i think. And im really not trying to start a pissing contest, or anything like that, just point out some things that some people just might not have known.
