Ok i have a new 400 in my bronco from napa. Do you think the timing on this one is also retarded or come 0 degree?? Also can you use the same timing set if it is retarted and just advance it 4degrees. (this case if it is already new) Im wondering because im in a toss up doing a cam replacement and dont no if it would pay to get new timing set, being this on has 5,000miles on it...
I'm not sure if it was 72 or 73 when Ford started the 4 degree retardation on their cams for these motors so anything later than that with a stock timing set would have in.
You need to decide what you want out of this powerplant. This engine is designed for torque more than horsepower. Tim Meyer has dyno results from the 400. It is interesting to note that the horsepower struggles to make 400 HP, but torque is in the range of 450 Ft Lbs. I'm a mudder and torque will bring you up and out of the mud.
RE: retarded timing..
I have gotten two stories on this...I have read/heard they did not retard the timing on the trucks...just cars. Someone set me straight..thanks.
