57 steering

Ok so if I put 17in 1 ton tires on my 1957 a little 2 inch lift would be nice.

So if I were to throw in a couple blocks between my leaf spring and axle would that likely harm my steering alingment greatly?

Would I have to extend my pitman arm 2 inches does anyone here have a idea what would happen?

NEVER put blocks on the front suspension as it will cause major driveability problems.

Are you sure the 17" wheels won't fit without a lift?

They do but the coolness factor isn't as high

How do you lift it then?

fabricate some shackles to drop your leaf's further from the current mounts. i'd believe that works a little better than blocks...

You could create longer shackles like Sherm said (may need to adjust caster) or the best way would be to get your springs rearched or new springs. Another thing if you put a longer pitman arm on, the steering will become more sensitive.

Springs is the way to go for sure! If you go with new ones then its another step of restoration done too.

Yes but with 10 trucks or so and then school I have to budget. Not sure if anyone in the right state of mind would sell or make spring to lift a 1957 3/4 ton 2x4. there was no 4x4 Fords in 57 as I'm sure you all know.
1959 was the first 4x4 for Fords if anyone curious. 1950 International came out with there first.

Some cool info snow I didnt know that. My uncle back home has an old 4x4 with that bodystyle, must be a 59. As for the springs, a good spring shop wont care what your putting them on!

I guess I'll try putting in spacers, now to figure out how high should I go. 2,3 inches?

true how high do you say? I don't mind extending the drive shaft, steering not looking forward to messing with though.
The tirs I'm putting on are 35inch. high in total, those old 1ton wheels. From like a 1950 1 ton Chev or Ford.

What size of tires and rims does it have stock? A 35 inch tire is pretty tall, you might have to go higher then 3 inchs. All depends I guess on the look you are looking for too.

The old ones are 26 or 28inches in total on 16 inch rim. Really they are bad smallish tires.

One thing I forgot to mention is blocks on the front is also illegal. Adding a block makes the axle act like a lever which normally breaks the u-bolts and the axle slides under the truck. Here's a quote from the Offroading forum on blocks.

"for every inch of block used, you create 7 times the force originally imposed on the affected components"

I just don't want you to kill yourself. Oh BTW a 2" lift shouldn't affect the driveshaft length. Just put some 7.50x16 trailer tires on and they are 32" tall. 7.50x17 tires are 34" and are hard to find new.

Illegal smchegal I guess to big of a block wouldnt be too good either. But your going up quite abit with your tire too. If you have 16 inch rims You should be able to fit a newer radial tire on that rim too. Then you could get abit more height, maybe not have to raise it either, if you didnt want to.
