Currently have a 1991 remanufactured ZF-5 (542) transmission out of a 1986 F-350 dump truck 6.9L has all the updates to join the two and works great. This rig belongs to a friend of mine who pulled it out because reverse kept jumping out of gear. His father took it to someone and it has been there for close to a month now. Long story short this guy says he can't find a reverse gear rebuild kit for this trans. Now since it has been pulled apart by someone else makes it a little to much taboo for me. Does anyone here have a line on where I can get this reverse gear and apparently there is an updated version that eliminates this gear jumping issue. The money this guy is talking to do the job I am almost leaning to tell him get another reman. Any Help would be great!
I have driven this truck and it works really well. It does jump occassionally out of reverse. The rest works and shifts spot on. This guy is a GM mechanic but supposedly has worked on these transmissions. He says it is the reverse gear and that there is an update reverse gear for this trans. I know GM is using the ZF-6 against the D-Max and maybe he is confusing the two I really don't know or know him. My buddies Dad is stubborn as they can get and he really wants this guy to fix it but a month later?
The GM guy is saying 2 things and course this is 3rd party. But he is talking 800 dollars. I have worked on these and the bearing and synchro kits are 500-600 all by themselves. So, to answer a question I really don't know what he is doing. Just says he can't find a reverse gear kit. I would greatly appreciate your help on this.
If I can help this project along and not have to get the basket case myself all the better. Local shops here seem to be either hacks or just parts changers so I have been getting some blank expressions. Thanks again!
Success! GM guy went out of his way and found a specialty transmission shop and direct ordered from them. Total kit cost 200 and change. I will find out more and which company so I can pass it along to everyone here.
The big problem with the ZF trans is the fact that Rev is a syncro. Most of us Ford drivers are used to shifting a reverse gear, so a little grinding into reverse is no big deal. That little grind,in the ZF's, eats the reverse syncro up . The replacement parts are like buying a piece of Europe,$$$$$$$$$.And since 5th and REv are the same syncro..... ouch. Phil
I've always been accustomed to shifting into 1st then to Reverse, while fully stopped in any vehicle I'm in to eliminate the grinding on a non-synchronized Reverse... Wouldn't this practice save the synchro?
Pele: Yes,I think that is a good practice. I found that just taking the little extra time to ensure the truck is stopped made it work well. I had learned the bad habit while snow plowing. Just had to retrain my self to slow down a little. Now I've done the next better thing, go to Florida for the winter, let other guys plow. LOL. Phil
