I recently watched a video taken by a person while they were driving their Duramax. The purpose of the video was to document that it was overheating while driving down I10. Although I was underwhelmed by the Duramax, the guy’s laptop fascinated me.
While he was driving, his laptop was displaying all the engine parameters. At one time the onboard computer put the truck in the “limp” because of overheating. The code was displayed on the laptop and, while driving, the guy reset the code and it came off of the “limp” mode.
Since I have laptop mounted in my truck I thought this would be great software to use just for gauges. Has anyone heard of such software? If so, where do I buy it?
Thats the benifit to chevey's.....you can purchase software and hook a laptop up and watch or tune just about anything in the engine. Fords dont really have that type of advantage........but if there is a software program it wont be as intuitive as the one for the chevy's.
I have used Auto's software, one feature I liked about it is the recording. You can datalog and review it later.
I am holding off buying thier newer version until I have had a chance to try sniper inc.'s datalogging. I have Sniper's special forces software and thier datalogger is supposed to be a top notch improvement for thier tuner.
My only suggestion would be to get the kit that does chevy, chrysler and ford. It's cheaper to buy the one than all three and you never know when you might want to read another vehicle.
auto enginuity also has a great package. It has the same recording features and works great on the SD's. You have to get the enhanced package in order for it to work on diesels though.
Autotap is a great package at a fair price. I have it and have used it a few times to monitor sensors with Autotaps guages while on long trips. Autotap's logging feature allows you to play back the trip for a mechanic if necessary.
I sell the big names on a regular basis (I run a local truck accesory store) and I think the sniper special forces is the future of DIY tuners. It's really a custom tune from the start, they do start from a better place then stock I belive, but you get to input for your bolt ons and then tweak the fuel and spark curves. You do it on a PC/Laptop so they arent constrained by a small display, so you can see what your doing and there are only four pages of inputs with multiple inputs per page. I highly recommend them and some type of log. http://www.home.cfl.rr.com/reax/sniper.pdf this is the log I use, and it has most of the current options.
