Well, less than a week after I got my new clutch in I find that my pinion bearing is toast. Started vibrating real bad yesterday. dropped the driveshaft and the pinion yoke had about a 1/4" of up and down movement in it. I got it torn down last night the outer bearing is real pitted and loose. The ring gear's got little chips out at the heel of the gear. I'm having trouble finding the inner bearing locally. The drivetrain place here cant have it until next week. Any tips or suggestions on picking up the ring and pinion? Anybody else had this problem?
Well, I put all new bearings in the rear end, set the gears back up right, pattern looked fine, backlash was .012" drove fine for 2 days then it went out again last night. So now I'm gonna look for a whole axle from the junk yard. I started looking this morning on car-part.com and it asks you for all of these tag codes. What are all of these different codes? shouldnt a single wheel truck have the same axle, just different ratios? Also, does anybody think a driveshaft problem would cause those pinion bearings to go out? Its got a new ujoint at the back.
