I have read somewhere that the shroud has to be cut if you look about 1/3 of the way down on both sides I have a 2005 S.D. your's may be different you did not say what year you have.
Remove the radiator brackets and 2 bolts that hold the shroud, plus top hose
Pull the radiator toward you and pull the shroud up and out.
What you are left with is a fan and stator
You will have to remove the fan with a special wrench
The stator just has a few bolts
To cheat you might be able to loosen the stator with out removing the fan and buy you enough room to work the belt and pulley.
I'm sure one of our resident techs from the real world will have a better idea.
I have to do this soon. I cannot really see because to the shroud but why do you have to remove the fan? What am I not seeing? This will be the first vehicle that I will have to remove something to install a serp. belt.
trying to get serp. belt off to install higher output altermator.ended up fabricating a horseshoe shaped piece of 1/4 in. plate and welding a handle to it to release tensioner.alternator is a 160 amp large body w/ h.d. rectifier and regulator.horseshoe piece slipped over entire tensioner, worked great.
Thanks deezel. My next project in 2-3 months is most likely going to be similar to yours - a higher output alternator. I plan on feeding a deep cycle battery and then supply a 1500 to 2000 watt power inverter. I'm looking to run 120V power tools out in the middle of nowhere on my deer lease. What brand alternator did you decide to get? I assume that it is an aftermarket since the Ford high output is 140 amp. I have read good things about the American Armature Series Alternators from American Power Systems.
