rough idleing
I have a 1987 I six. It was running great for the longest time and just a few weeks ago it started to idle realy rough. I took it to four different dealers and mechanics and was told the same over and over again - they do not know what it is.
I replaced the map sensor, spark plugs and wires, throttle body gasket, but it does not make a difference. When starting cold,I can stall the engine just by pushing the gas pedal to the floor. It seems O.K. when it is warmed up. I disconected the electrical plug from the EGR valve and it seems to run a bit smoother. My power is just about nil at cold start. -- Please anyone HELP!!!!!!!!

Other options would be EGR itself, a stray cat in the intake hose, or the "idle air bypass plate". It's called a number of things, but it directly effects the idle. Mounted right at the throttle body opening (on drive side on V-8) with a couple of small screws, with a solenoid piggy backing it. Remove screws and clean the thing with Berryman's Chemtool or similar. Careful with the gasket. I use Ultra Blue for my gasket, but I'm not sure if that is the best idea. I can tell I'm over due to do mine, since I can't remember it in full color detail. About once a year on mine.
Hope that helps.
