Guys, I have a 2001 7.3 with 178KM on the clock. Just recently (last few runs) the truck developed a rough idle and threw the check engine code.
The truck is fairly hard starting on cold mornings and it seems like the check engine light comes on when the engine warms up.
So far I havent tried much except pull the plug on the IPC sensor to check if this could be the problem. Read in another post that this check can be performed to see if the sensor is failed. Anyway this proved nothing as the rough idle stayed with the sensor pulled.
Anyone with any suggestions would be great. I am new to these engines and I dont really want to take it to a shop until I absolutely have to.
What is fault code you got.. ? or did you just get a Check Engine Light..(SES)
If you got a Check engine light then the computer has stored a code. But dont bother going to Autozone for the codes as their reader doesn't work on our trucks. Not sure if any of the other auto part stores have one that will.
I did read through another thread a few weeks back about someone having the same issue as you and it turned out to be the IPR.
But in your case....can you give us any more info that may help? Is it blowing smoke? If so, what color?
Is the turbo still trying to spool up?
Did this suddenly come on or gradually get worse.
Does it idle smooth but run rough when accelerating or vise versa?

It does blow smoke some mostly white smoke on startup but it eventually clears up.
Not sure about you turbo question
The truck was running great until a few days ago when this developed. The first day it happened but cleared up after a while but today the check engine light came in and stayed in most of the time but did have one or two clear periods when the light went out and the engine ran normal but now it seems it wont go away.
To answer your last question. When the light is on it runs rough all the time, while idleing and driving.
That sound exactly like what happened to me and it was the UVCH's. I finally just replaced the harnesses. Although beating them up when replacing the glow plugs didn't help much either
Here is forum link to show you how to fix it... using two quarters... and some of your labor time.. (that is if your wiring harness is in good shape under your valve covers..) https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...ck-shakes.html
Just wanted to post an upsdate. The truck still has the problem and I have not had a chance to test the UVCH yet but poking around under the hood yesterday I did notice that the turbo wastegate connection is broke off at the wastegate actuator. Could this cause any symptoms that I am having?
One more thing, started it again today and same thing, hard to start but once running it runs fine with no check engine light. Once warmed up some it starts to run rough again with light on.
finally got some time to try and get the truck fixed. Ohmed out the UVCH and I think I found my issue.
The drivers side injectors and glow plugs all measure open.....no continuity through any injector or glow plug.
The pasenger side injectors and GP's all measure within spec.
Looks like I have a job on my hands. Is there anything to look out for that could cause me issues when removing these VC's
Also, the truck did get alot worse over the past few months and right now it wont even stay running. When I do get it going it rocks the whole truck which makes since I guess if the complete side is not firing.
Anyway I have Saturday put aside to pull the VC's and hopefully fix this problem. I will post an update once done.
Double check the connection at the injectors as well to make sure none have slid down.
Also check the wiring under there as well to make sure there isn't any of it rubbing against a moving part.

Also check the center pin on the 9 pin connector under the valve cover ... they have been know to get burned from being loose..
And re torque everything according to the link #7 above..
When you have time remove the other VC and do the same..
Guys, is there a better location that I could perform the driver side measurements from. I had a hard time holding the meter leads and light while doing this thus I am second guessing myself and the measurements I got.
Can these measurements be done from the IDM or some other junction?
If so where is this other location. Is the IDM on the driver side fender, I believe I read that on here somewhere.
