I just bought 2000 Explorer Sport 2wd. When I first start it cold, It runs very rough like it is running on only 4 cylinders. After only a couple of minutes it seems to get a little warmth, smoothes out and idles/runs fine. CEL is not on. What should I be looking for?
Wouldn't it run bad all the time if the gaskets were bad? I think so. I'm thinking a cold start sensor is getting out of range but not bad enough to set off the light, or perhaps a dirty Iac valve, or dirty throttle plate.

Nope, when the truck warms up enough the gaskets seal themselves from heat expansion.
When the IAC is dirty it will cause the truck to hunt for an idle and to surge but not run on 4. A dirty throttle plate wouldn't cause that either.
Thanks for the imput guys. The rough idle (almost diificult to keep running) only last for a couple minutes. Would there be enough heat to expand the gaskets in that short amount of time?
When I started the truck for the first time today it was about 45 degrees outside. It started right up. no rough idle issues. So what ever is wrong, it is temperature related.
More than likely its the intake gasket I just went through the same thing recently. Check to see if you have any pending DTC 171-174 if you do then that is your problem. Cost me 390 only because my intake manifold was warped as well.
There isn't a cold start sensor. The few minutes would be enough to warm up the engine enough for the gaskets to seal. From what you have said, it sounds like the problem isn't very bad at this point but is definitely something to be aware of and possibly tackle when the weather gets nicer out.
I assume that you are talking about iat (intake air temp) sensor but that doesn't sound like the problem. The biggest problem with the sohc engines is the itake gasket failing. There is such a problem that they have a campaign out for it 00m12. I just recently went through the same situation as he described this past winter.
MisterCMK you were right on the money! I replace upper and lower rubber gaskets and she pures like a kitten. While I had the intake off, I installed the revised cam chain tensioner. I wish the previous owner would have done this when it was under warranty. No more morning rattles!
