I have a '96 Bronco w/ 351 engine. Whenever it sits for about an hour, it will idle low and erratic. Should I try fuel injection cleaner as I have heard that there is a coating on some surfaces that manual cleaning may damage? Any suggestions on repair before winter in Wisconsin?
If you can duplicate this concern try disconnecting the vac. line to the egr valve and then start the engine. If the problem goes away the egr vac. regulator is sticking. I see that all the time at work. At work I use a vac. gauge and you can see abought 3 inches of vacumn on a cold start and it will drop to 0 real quick. Just a possibility. Norm.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Jul-02 AT 01:08 PM (EST)]Yep, that did it. Removed and plugged vac line and engine runs fine. Do you clean or replace this thing? If I remove the vac line from the egr and leave it plugged, what harm can I cause? Will I get an engine code indicating poor egr flow?
You need to replace the regulator. I think there about $35.00. If you leave the egr inop. you will get a check engine lite, prone to ping, and the passages and valve will plug up. Not worth it. The egr does nothing bad when working right.
could that be my problem also.....stutters and jerks after sitting for a few hours, also tends to not want to start after sitting overnight.......takes 2 or 3 times for it to stay running
