Question Question

Ok, Yall are probably going to laugh at my for asking this but im new to the diesel truck industry and there is something that I was wanting to ask. Ok im sure there is a few people that have been to a truck or tractor pull and have seen these diesel trucks with there smoke stacks, and when ever they're pulling they roll out this HUGH cloud of black smoke, I love this and I was wondering what are they putting on their trucks to make them smoke like this please let me know. Thanks

3 turbos, water injection, massive injection pumps (gallon or two of fuel per pull) and the list goes on...

Nope I am serious as a heart attack. Have a neighbor who has had tractor pullers. He has even went to the nationals. His tractor was called "Mean Old Allis"
He figured he had about 100K in the tractor.

Ok say that I dont want to pull I just want it to smoke that way with the least amount of mods...I want it for show not for pulling. Is there some kind of kit I can buy? If so what is it and where should I look to buy it?

Only problem - is depending on where you live - you would not meet EPA specs for an on road vehicle (depending on year). You might find what you want by doing a www.metacrawler.com search or check with the guys in the diesel competion forum.

What you might try if you have an older IDI 6.9 or 7.3 non turbo. Is to get more, no a lot more fuel to the system such as cutting off most of the air to the engine.

Here's the problem- that black smoke is unconsumed #2 fuel oil= diesel fuel.
I don't know where your at but I gave $2.54/gallon for it today. I know it looks cool and I like to see it every now and then but.......it's not practical........ That's money down the drain and the tree huggers hate it(not that we care). This is easy to do with an older style engine, just turn the pump up, you need more mods and money for the newer electronic engines.

With my uncles old 7.3PS-we replaced the injectors with a set meant for a dt530(they have larger orifice holes in the tips=more fuel/pulse width) then we installed an on the fly tuner. It won't roll puller type smoke but it will leave a cloud behind it. These mods. were after the common mods.-exaust,wheels&tires,stereo........and all the other bells and whistles.

What yr/mke/mod/eng do you have?

Basically all that black smoke is just fuel, pure unburnt fuel. Diesel fuel emits soot when it burns, and lots of it. In fact if you take a glass jar of diesel #2 and light it, it will burn and emit black smoke. What happens when you turn the fuel way up on a truck is that more fuel than the engine can burn gets into the combustion chambers, it then goes into the exhaust manifold while still burning, emitting soot and the black smoke the whole time. Of course on a turboed system most of the fuel gets burnt, and what you see is mostly pre-boost.

I heard a state trooper in Pennsylvania and I questioned one in Ohio and they would allow approximately 5 - 7 seconds per shift for the black smoke to clear. If it didn't , they pulled the truck over and wrote a summons. This was back in the late 70's when all Hell broke loose about fuels and economy.
Just my two cents.

The birthdate shines brightly.

Might I ask how the smoke makes the truck a "real truck" even though it is not indicative of any true power or torque produced (or even real modification level) and is just for show?

he's basicly like the ricer crowd who just want everyone to look (the "coffee can" exhausts and neons and pointless hood scoops with crazy bumpers and other crap).... guys just let him get a couple mods to make a lil puff every now and then and he'll get hooked just like everyone else on this site did... than we'll have another diesel lover who loves the trucks for the power, sound, and feel, not the looks....
