I have a 99 F-150 with a messed up auto tranny. I have had it rebuilt 4 times and still the same problem. One shop rebuilt it 3 times and said that it was electrical. So, I took it to a reputable ford dealer and they said "horse *****." They rebuilt it and still it is failing. Previously, it kicked in and out of gear while at idle. It has always "clunked" while downshifting from 1st to second. I found that if the overdrive was locked out that it would not do this. Someone told me that this was a common ford thing. I say that if I spend close to 3 grand, the darn thing should operate properly. Most recently, the truck will "die" during the downshift event (if I forget to lock out the OD). Has anyone heard of this? It is getting old. I am beginning to think that I should have bought foreign. Thanks for your input!
I have 1998 F150 4X4 That clunks at torque converter when downshifting just before stopping only in overdrive mode. It drives me crazy because the truck is babied and has only 35000 miles on it. Does anyone else have this problem or a fix!
My 02 150 kinda stumbles and clunks when downshifting also. I haven't tried taking it out of overdrive. I did take it to the dealer and they said it was normal!! About what I expected them to say. I guess I'll have to wait for it to fall out on the road before they say something is wrong.
Sounds Like The valve body in the transmisson has a problem.
Did they mention anything about the Valve body after your rebuild?
I've seen them with a hair line fracture that allowed fluid to escape the ports, not moving the check ***** fast enough, and then after more pressure is built up the ball suddenly moves, and thats what causes the clunking in the direct drum. I have heard that ford uses a agressive valve body to make the shifting more sudden to keep the clutch wear down over the life of the transmission.
Just my 2 cents, Or no sense...
i have a 97 f150 4x4 4.6l, when im comming to a stop or slowing down the truck will stumble because its not downshifting into first gear, it is really noticeable when the truck is cold. the abs light is on i dont know if that has anything to to with it i just purchased the truck a week ago and the dealer still needs to fix that i did check for voltage at the vss sensor at the back of the trans and there was no voltage but the speedo works fine. its not the egr, tps, dpfe, tps, maf, or a vacume leak they have all been checked or replaced. i also noticed when im sitting in one spot the my foot on the brake when i put the truck in first then to second it will stall or stumble. or go from drive to second it will do the same untill the truck gets up to operation temp. im lost any help would be great. thanks
"I have had it rebuilt 4 times and still the same problem."
If I suspect a transmission problem on any modern/expensive trans, I get rid of the transmission (and torque converter) by turning it in as a core and get one from a volume rebuilder, or I install a trans I know works. Local transmission shops don't usually have large core and parts selections to choose from and may not have a way to power up transmissions out-of-vehicle to test them.
