I have a TS 6 POS in the 97, and an E4OD and i hate the way the thing shifts, its sloppy and doesn't really do worth a **** getting out of its own way, half the time it will shift from 3 to 4 dropping from 2K RPM clear down to 1200 RPM. What good does that do other than lug the engine? why would it do that????.... i got no idea. I got the P1728 code when i first got the truck almost a year ago now, so i dropped the pan, and filter. NO METAL ANYWHERE. not even fine particles in the pan.... pulled the tranny, swapped torque converter w a new one from ford just to be safe as i didn't have the money for a built trans immediately after buying the truck. drained old converter. NO METAL. NO NOTHING. so i probably changed the dang thing for nothing. the fluid i took out of both wasn't in bad shape but i have changed the fluid in the pan twice since then and it never gets hot. the hottest i have seen this tranny is 160. even pulling my ol ladies 6.0 around it never got above 160 and that is a heavy load on my 2500-3000 lb trailer. the truck has a decent sized tranny cooler on it which is new.
now the other day i was pulling my 09 focus on the same trailer i pull the 6.0 with and going up some hills i got P1728 again, 3 times, i used the Insight to clear the codes out and it has been fine for the last 3 days. again it didn't get hot. it just acts like if its in 4th w TC locked and i give it some extra fuel to get over a hill it will unlock the TC and the RPM will jump up to 2400 from 2000 and the code will set, rather than downshifting from 4th to 3rd it just unlocks the TC. I can see what gear its actually in using the Insight. in my mind it should downshift without putting the pedal all the way to the floor but thats about what it takes, ya have to really stab it to get a downshift and then as soon as you start letting off the throttle itll drop back into 4th weather your still pulling the hill or not (this happens with or without the trailer).
So i guess what im really wondering here is does this sound like a mechanical problem to you guys or a programming one? to me it seems like a programming issue, so if that is the case what are my options to getting it fixed? if i send the TS off to be reburned can they adjust shifting while burning it for the engine mods?
To answer your short question, yes a TS chip can adjust the shift points, the firmness, etc. That's one of the major advantages of having one on an auto truck.
To get into your greater issue, I think your TC is on the way out. The PCM won't unlock the TC with the trans in OD. It just won't do it. It will downshift to 3rd and keep the converter locked but it won't unlock it in overdrive. Essentially what it's doing when you get that rise in RPM is slipping the converter clutches. Keeping it doing that for long will frag the converter and then the trans in short order.
so the chip can affect firmness ect, is it possible for the chip to be programmed to cause the converter to unlock? i haven't liked the way this thing shifts since i got it and if i invest in a new trans (Road Ripper 2 or 3000) here in the next few months im wanting to make sure there isn't a chance that someone could have had this chip programmed to do more harm than good in the direction of the transmission.... if that is the case that it is slipping the converter clutch i am rather disappointed because that converter is less than a year old and I've never really been hard on it, hell ive never even put this truck on the floor for fear of that trans letting go.
I thought about getting a triple disk but they were around 1000 dollars and i couldn't justify it when i planned on replacing the whole trans with a road ripper in about a year (from last dec) so i picked up the ford TC for about 300 bucks with my company discount.
I had talked to them earlier this year and they had quoted me 4500 +tax. certified transmission sells the road ripper 3000 for 3800+ tax. And they have a 3 year warranty. I don't have anything against BTS it's really going to come down to how much money I have at the time because it'll come down to 1000 dollars difference.
Shift points have always been an issue with me. I have begged tuners to raise them up and have not had any luck until a year and a half ago. I have three tuners and finally got one of them to do what I wanted. I sent chips thru the mail dozens of times for reburns only to get it back and nothing. Pulling my load I hated it switching to soon!!! I now have a chip that has a heavy tow mode that shifts a lot higher then then other chips, I love it!!
I had a ts in my last SD. The guy I got it from had ts work on the shifting. That thing would knock fillings out of your head.I sent it back to ts and had it put back.
Glenn.who is your choice now on tuning....I know you have tried most all....
