I have had the hardest time finding headers to fit my 302 in my 79 4X4. The truck originally had a 400 and I blew it up so now I built a 347 stroker but I can't seem to find headers for it. Does anyone out there know where I could find a set?
So long tube headers won't fit? Another idea that i had was to take my fenderwell exit 400 headers cut the flanges off and with a little heat and bending put 302 flanges on them. Anyone done that before?
Im glad someone finally brought this up. I put a 302 in a 79 that had a 300 6cyl in it. I found out Ford never put a 302 in the 73-79 4x4's so thats why you cant just look them up in a catalog. If a guy had the time and a real patient parts store you could go through all their boxes of 302 headers and find one that fits. If someone has done that let us know. Otherwise custom made headers would be way too spendy and I wouldnt want to try to "modify" headers to make them fit. You would be better off using manifolds than trying to modify different headers.
if it was already a 400 why didnt you just swap in a 460? buying a 460 and rebuilding it would be cheaper than building a 347 stroker, youd be able to use the existing practically bulletproof c-6 tranny, and youd have a heck of a lot more power and better reliability with the 460.

Sorry for being long, but the devil is in the details
I'm not much help as I am in the same mud hole, but with a 351w ( which is about 2 Inches wider). Here is what I do know. My set up is a 351W in 79 f-150 4x4, 435np.
Jeg's - Dynomax - for Ford truck '80-'88 4x4 pn 289-85115 do not fit.
The passenger side can almost bolt to the head ( probably will on a 302) mine rubs the frame behind the engine tower. Also the collector dumps right in line with the trans/transfer cross member, about 4" before the member. That would make for a very tight turn to get around it. The Drivers side has the same cross member issue and it comes very close to the front drive shaft at the collector exit. I think the '80 -'88 is IFS so the diff housing is mounted higher than the straight axle and more to the outside of the vehicle? The driver side does bolt up but the collector looks to be trying to go to the inside of the drive shaft, which there is way more room on the Outside of the drive shaft.
Jeg's - Patriot - Shorties - SB Ford- pn 737-H8427. Do not fit for me
on both sides the bolt flange hits the engine towers by about 3/8" from being able to bolt to the head. I have since sent them back. Many people have said shorties work in this application and I think I know why mine does not fit when others will. I am starting another thread on disscussing the SB in this Chassis - motor mount related.
Other thoughts are old broncos 302 headers very similar 4x4 set ups. The 351w is 2 wider than a 302 and the bronco frame is 4" narrower. So I am thinking that would work. I called Wild horses in CA but they were having supplier issues with long tube headers (Last fall). I talked to the grave yard and they weren't sure if their long tube 302 headers would fit a f-150 or not. At this point I haven't tried them yet.
I have a buddy with a '70 bronco w headers. He is in the process of removing the engine. He lent me the passenger side header ( doesn't have the drivers side out yet as he needs to lift the motor out to remove it) The pass side fits great, lots of room to change starter. But I don't have my cab on yet and it looks like it could be close to the floor boards. I'll know more in a few weeks when I get the drivers side and my cab on. Two issue here though - 1 the headers are not tuned as the primaries are all different lengths, primaries are all straight right down the side of the motor, so the # 1 is longer than #4 by the distance between the ports. 2. I have no idea who made these headers. As I hope to be pushing 500 hp I woulds really want the best performance header I can get.
I talked Stainless Works for a set of custon SS headers. They need the vehicle for three weeks and about $1500, Choke Cough choke. ( could sell the wife on $800 Not for $800) But I bet they a darn nice. They have a great process. First they tack weld & piece meal the tubes together to build a simulated set of headers that fit in the vehicle. Then they measure them up with a CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) (I assume) to create Digital data. Then they load the Data into a CNC mandrel bender Then Weld em up. That's what I want since I have thier SS Rod builders kit. I have about a bejillion into this project and rusted headers in the future are not a desired effect, especially when no-one make 'em.
I am Still Looking
One problem I have is I have been looking at too many High end Chip Foose Projects / TV Shows, and I am Out of my League.
Good Luck
