Someone told me a while back that 302 headers would work on a 400... has anyone tried this? I know the numbers are different from the manufacturers.
The reason I ask is I have a good set of headers I had ran for a little while on a '71 Sport Custom with 302/auto/2wd and I was going to use them on my '78 Explorer 400/C6/2wd so I wouldn't have to buy new ones for no reason.
The port location and spacing is the same. You could use 302 headers on a 400 if you cut the welds and removed the flanges, then welded 2v cleveland flanges on to the tubes. That's a lot of work for some 302 headers that will be too small for a 400 though. Just get some Hookers or Hedmans if 2wd

1. Make a paper template of the 302 header flange and measure/line up with a 400.
I deduce that there are different part numbers for a reason like port sizes, bolt hole spacing, bolt hole positions, etc.
