Hey guys, I have a 1979 bronco with a 351M. I noticed this morning that Im leaking coolant from above my starter. I couldnt see where it was coming from, just that it wasnt coming from any of the usual places. Im thinkin its a freeze plug leaking. Are these easy to change? I never messed with them before. Are the expandable one that autozone sells ok? Any thing I should know before i tear into this. Looks like I have to take the manifold off to get to it. Any sugestions?
I just replaced freeze plugs in my '78 bronco a few months ago. I have headers, and the motor is a 360 big block(not originally placed in broncos), so I didn't have alot of free space. I had to pull the motor. However, I have helped replace freeze plugs with a mouse motor still in when it had stock manifolds. It's kind of a hassle because there isn't alot of room to work, but it's do-able. I just got the plugs at NAPA. If you replace the plugs, spend some time cleaning the holes with some emery paper so you get a good seal. Good luck.
Mark.
Brass Freeze plugs are generally for areas with a lot of road salt. They are brass to fight corrosion. However, when I replaced my plugs on my 351W I went with Brass because the price wasn't a lot different but either way you are ok.
