Power Loss??

88 Bronco II 2.9 auto 4 wheel drive.

It ran great then started running bad, hard to start, no power stand on the gas and had very little.
Checked the codes engine off just codes 11. Engine running just got a 77 and a 74. Checked fuel pressure had about 37 at idle. So thought maybe the cat convert, had new exhaust ran all the back with no cat convert. When I got to the exhaust shop they said the cat convert was really hot. Ran a little better but still hard to start, low power, and a couple backfires through the exhaust. They said if the cat convert was plugged it will foul the spark plugs. So new spark plugs today. It starts right up now and does run much better. But still when I take off from a stop and give it the gas it does not have the power or take off it should. Better than it was but still not right.
Any suggestions??

Thanks

Cat converters usually don't "wear out." When they fail, something caused them to fail. If the converter is running hotter than normal, that usually indicates a rich mixture or other source of unburnt fuel (such as a misfire). Such a scenario will cause a converter to fail.

When you checked fuel pressure, did you do a leak down test? If the fuel rail doesn't hold pressure, that could indicate that the diaphragm is ruptured (allowing unmetered fuel into the intake via the vacuum line attached to the FPR), or that one or more fuel injectors is stuck open. After running the engine, is there fuel in the vacuum line to the FPR (indicatng that the diaphragm has ruptured)?

No I did not but I will. If the fuel filter needs changed could the fuel pressure be ok at idle but not get enough under load?

I'm not sure the cat was bad I called a mechanic here that worked on it before to see if he would take a look at it. He said take to a muffler shop first and check and see if there is a blockage in the exhaust. So I just had it left off. When I changed plugs they all looked good but one looked bad. They bad one the plug wire off of it.

Probably need to consider new plug wires, cap, rotor as well. Okay, let me see if I understand what you're saying... you had the cat removed and had new exhaust from the head Y-pipe back installed, and you still have issues with it? Only other things I can think of are sensors, especially the O2 sensor, along with fuel delivery. You may also have some fubar'ed injectors.

Yes, it needed exhaust anyway. Runs a lot better but still when put a load on it the power is low. Plan on doing the fuel filter, leak down test, cap, rotor, and wires this weekend. I thought about the O2 sensor as well but it not showing any codes, if the other does not help may change it anyway.

Oh, just re-looked at the codes. You operator errored and didn't hit the brake and do the WOT part of the code scan test (KOER, I believe?). You should re-run the tests and make sure you hit the brake, turn the wheel side to side, and put the gas to the floor and let off in accordance with the test procedure. That may tell you if you have other issues. How many miles are on the truck? Wondering if the engine is worn out or wasn't maintained that well. You may also want to check your idle stop and IAC as well as maybe clean the intake and throttle body and all. Question... does your accelerator pedal bind when you try and give it gas? If so, the idle stop is too far out, causing the linkages to bind on the throttle body. Anyhow, hope some of my ramblings help. Let us know what you find
