On my 89 Bronco, 302, it seems as if the AC compressor clutch ceased to function. The AC was working perfectly, then all of a sudden, it was no longer cold and became humid. My compressor will no longer turn with the AC on. I am still getting 12V at the plug which rules out the pressure switch, so I figure the clutch is to blame. Is it possible to remove and replace the clutch without pulling the compressor completely? I don't want to have to pay to evacuate and then refill the R-12 if I dont have to, not to mention the cost of a new compressor. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
I've done it a couple times on my 85 with 351. Its pretty easy, just have to remember to remove the bolt in front of the compressor couterclockwise as it's left-handed threads. Good luck.
Turns out the clutch is fine after jumpering (is that a word?) the pressure switch. Now I guess the question is, is the switch bad or am I low on refrigerant? The AC blew extremely cold prior to its cessation of function. Any ideas?
So I'll guess you probably have a bad switch. The way to tell if you have low refrigerant is the A/C will cycle on/off every few seconds (versus every 30-60 seconds with full refrigerant). So you may check elsewhere like a switch.
Makes sense, but since I am running the system by jumping the plug, therefore bypassing the switch, won't the system continue to run regardless of refrigerant level? Also, to replace that pressure switch, is it necessary to evacuate the system or otherwise mess with it?
You got me now. What I'd do now is take her down to my local shop and have them do the rest of the checking. They should do it for little-no charge. And be able to give you the straight scoop!
