i have a 7.8 in a f-800 bucket truck that is a complete dog. it has a rebuilt motor so i dont think its just a wore out motor. it wont run over 50mph, and its none governed. i was thinking maybe a guy could turn up the injector pump a little to get some power outta it? would this cause problems w/ EGTs? any help would be great
That sounds like a timing issue. If it's manually injected (as opposed to electronic controls) then you should be able to advance or retard the timing by adjusting the position of the injection pump.
There's hope still.
You can turn it up in about a half hour, click on the link in my sig. You'll see the 6.6 & 7.8 listed with the IH ones, a little over half way down. There's a little cover on the front of the timing case where you can fiddle with timing, but do it after you adjust the fuel screw. Setting the timing without the "shop method" is more of a trial & error deal. Basically you nudge the timing one way, drive it, and if it's worse, go back the other way. This will only go about 8 crank degrees, so you cant mess it up too far. But it will raise EGT pretty good. If it's not your truck, see if your fleet dept will put a pyro on it.
