2005 F250 CC FX4.... 63K pn the clock. Bone stock...
I have asked my dealership (Payton Wright - Grapevine Texas) to look at the AF condition since 25K and change it if necessary.... I get every oil change done by them and every time they say it looks good and change it when the 'meter' indicates...... I told them I wanted to follow the manual and change it every 30K (or whatever) and they said phewy, why spend the money, wait and change it when the meter indicates.....
Never had a problem with anything on the truck, gets great mileage (16 town, 19-20 highway) and it pulls my 5'ver just fine.....
I have had them document my requests and their responses since 25K and write it in my log book....
Question: It maybe obvious, but should I change it???? or why mess with a $300 bill if it runs fine??? Please do not be to harsh all you die-hard diesel freaks...HAHAHAHA
i would change it as the manual says...do u have guages?? u could be loosing boost and not even know it....still surprised the dealer is passing up money..
I've read from planty of people on here not to trust the meter. I never had any problems either but thought the same thing you did and I went with the manual. The meter on my truck hadn't even moved either when I went to change it. You're dealer is dumb for not wanting to change it at your request. The filter alone isnt cheap, and add that to the cost that they will charge for labor.
It's kinda a pain in the a** to change by yourself, a lot of pinched fingers, and the directions arent that well written. You just have to be patient and not ruin the filter element by trying to cram it into the small area.
WTH.. Someone please pick me up off the floor.. Is our filter REALLY that freakin expensive? For 300.00 it better cook, clean, wash my hide, gimme pleasure and take the trash out..
Thats like another set of gauges for me on the passenger side! HAHA
ThAt would be cool.. Put gauges on passenger side so the Passie can look COOL..
The Ford service schedule simply states to check the filter minder and replace filter when necessary, it does not give a specific mileage to change the air filter at.
I agree with your dealer, only replace it when it needs it. I have a little over 77,000 mi on my stock air filter and it is fine. It is a large filter with alot of filter surface area and made hold alot of dirt/material before being restricted. I believe it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 8lbs of dirt/material.

The minder reads in the percentage of restriction. The higher the percentage the more the restriction. If you look at the minder it is marked that way. As for staying in one spot, it will do that. It takes alot to cause true restriction with these filters. Alot of people say the minder does not work and do not ever move, but all the ones I have seen/used do move and work. Most people just change there filters too soon to let the minder do its job.
as long as it is donaldson the color doesnt matter.
Color does matter. While the white media is a good filter the blue media is better. The blue media has a higher filtration efficiency as well as a higher dust holding capacity than the white media. Plus the blue media is OEM.
I've been kinda debating on this for a while too. I've had a brand new replacement filter in my garage for almost a year now, but I've yet to install it because the truck runs fine, great mpg, normal boost, and the indicator hasn't changed. I'm going back and forth, but I'm thinking that I might wait for a change in the indicator (any change at all) and then I'll change it. Maybe the other half of me just doesn't feel like crushing my fingers in there! By the way, have any of you "do-it-yourselfers" ran into any warranty problems with not having changed the air filter every 30k miles???

I took my truck in at 50K for a new EGR and had the oil changed and air filter checked while I was there. They said even with 50K on the filter it was fine and I did not need to replace it. So there were definately no warranty problems. Also, there is nothing that I have seen that says you have to change your filter every 30K.
