Bad Rattle

2000 F-250 CC Lariat 4X4 Auto 160,000 miles developed a bad rattle yesterday can't find anything loose. While idling or loose peddle truck rattles real bad. All the pulleys were running cool with no heated bearings anywhere, just sounds like something rattling around. Any ideas would help. I am 400 miles from the house and will be away for a while and need to drive truck everyday. Does not seem to bother the power any. Thanks Jed

Can you let it idle and try to pin point where the rattle is coming from? Try taking a piece of tubing or hose and put one end by your ear and move the other end around where the rattle seems to be.

Does it sound like it is coming thru the floor boards, with a rattle noise or a thump noise? Loose shocks, sway bar bushing?

Had the same problem on my 99. Only at idle or when engine feathers down while slowing. Sounds like marbles in a coffee can. Turned out to be Torque Converter.

Definitely coming from rear of engine/ TC area. Took the dust shield off and still can't tell for sure. When I have a load on the engine it doesn't do it, only when at idle or when slowing down.

It does sound like a can of marbles though...Damn didn't want to replace those parts yet....there went the exhaust

Yep that's me, In my last few days of research I have concluded that the TC rattle can go on and on for many miles with no ill effect, Ive had the rattle for 150K now and she just keeps on tuggin. I was told by a local ford Diesel mech named DOC that the friction modifier would not help my situation, and to just keep going untill I felt some slippage.

I haven't noticed any power loss, but the noise is so loud its downright embarrasing to stop anywhere. I just don't want the thing grenading in the middle of nowhere. I am going to be away from the house for the next 9 months and trying to get it fixed without losing my ride. Appreciate all the help

I listened to mine for a long time before finally replacing it. I really didn't know how much noise mine was making until I had a new one. Sounds like a totally differant truck. bdrummonds is like me and owns the 99.5 which is well know for the coffee can TC. If yours was a 99, I might not worry so much, but with yours being a 2000, might lead me to worry a bit more. 2000's didn't have a much history of the rattles as the 99's. Just food for thought. I did drive mine a long time with the rattles and finally got tired of the sound and the worry about what would happen if, what ever is causing the rattles come loose while I'm heading up the mountian with my camper behind me.

Same story here. Got da%n tired of that noise. Found a killer deal on a new Ford TC and no more noise. No difference in how in runs but worth it to get rid of the rattle.
