how long has ford been using the current engines...
namely the 4.2L 6 cylinder, and the 4.6L and 5.4 8 cylinders? how well has the 4.6L held up so far? just curious because it's the engine i have and i like this truck alot. should see 200,000 miles with little problems, eh?
I think the 4.6 was first used in 91 and has been very reliable. The 4.6 is used in Lincoln Towncars and many are used as limos. Go to e-bay and look up Towncars and sort by mileage, highest to lowest, and you will some very high miles on the engines. It's probably the most durable engine Ford has ever made. This morning, there is one listed that has 474,000 miles on it, 7 with over 300,000, 8 with over 200,000, 34 with over 150,000, etc.
The 4.2L V6 came out with the 97' models, before that it was a 4.9L I6. Same with a 4.6 and 5.4 they have also been used since 97
97+ 4.2 4.6 5.4
96- 4.9 5.0 5.8
They started the Modular motors in 91 with the 4.6, offered in SOHC in Crown Vics and DOHC in Mark VIII's. The 5.4 came out in 97, and the 6.8 in 99. There have been many revisions, mainly to the cylinder heads. The "PI" heads showed up in late 99, and 3V 4.6s in 04, and 3V 5.4s in '05.
i took a cab ride in a crown vic one day when i was out in florida, early 90's 4.6L, thing had 450K on it, and it would still cruise down the highway...
and yeah, guy i know in the sports car club up here has a '95 stang with a 5.0...
