Another Question

First let me say thanks to those who make this site happen...its awesome!! After reading through many posts I'm beginning to discover that maybe I'm idleing my truck too much. In the mornings I always let it run long enough to come up to operating temp before I take off and then either I let it run while running quick errands, or let it do a "cool-down" of about 5 minutes before shutting it down, as I've always understood it was hard on the turbo to shut down immediatly. I did hook the jumper wire up to aux.4 switch so now I can high idle to prevent fuel stacking...anyways I may idle on average an hour or so while out and about, the rest being mostly stop and go driving. My question is should I be shutting this thing down every time I stop or the practice of leaving it running the better of two evils? Also I see alot of people have their own flash code readers to help diagnose certain engine faults. I would like to pick up one of those so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated thanks again

If you run the motor hard, I am under the impression that you really should idle for a few minutes to let the heat excape with the flow of exhaust. The engine spins, and that's what it is designed to do, I can see letting it spin without a load doing it any harm.

I hooked up the High-Idle to mine also and let it idle a good 20-25 mins in the mornings to warm up. When the outside temp gets above 60, I probably will stop that practice. I only drive about 3-4 miles to get to work so I like to get her up to temp prior to arriving. I have an EGT on mine and usually let it cool to at least 400 before I shut down. Usually, that's less than a minute before she's cool, UNLESS I've run into another diesel to play with. If I get on her hard, then she needs a couple minutes to calm back down.

I read my codes using my SCT xCal2 Tuner. Works great, but the expensive way to go if you don't want to tune her up a notch or ten.

I recommend the Equus 3130 scan tool. It talks MSRP of $299 on the website, but do not believe it. I paid a cool $169 off Amazon. http://www.iequus.com/index.php

Displays Freeze Frame Data

Includes Spanish and French Interface & Definitions (selected by a menu command)

Unit can be flash updated with a standard Windows® PC (OBD-PC Link™ software required / included with tool)

Memory / Battery backup for off-car review and analysis
IMHO...if you are NOT having any EGT issues, then your idling time is fine. However...all that time in the morning is causing you a lot of fuel. Give it 5 or 10min MAX now in the winter...and off you go.
