Voltage question

2000, F/350, 7.3l
My battery light started flickering on and off about a week ago but truck starts and runs strong, I assumed the light was faulty until yesterday when i notice the voltage indicator would bounce between 1/2 (where it should be) and red line 18v. It will stay at 1/2 then shoot up to red line every couple of minutes? Voltage regulator problem and if so how tough to change?

The voltage regulator is actually part of the alternator in these trucks. There is no external regulator. When its doing its thing, put a voltmeter on the battery terminals. See if the reading you get from there is bouncing or not. Check all battery connections, take them apart and clean them. Let us know what you find.

However, the internal voltage regulator may be replaceable if you need to. So may be the brushes, which could also be the problem.

See:

However, I would take Rebel's advice first, and clean ALL the connections to the batteries and the alternator, including the grounds.

Just be sure which alternator you have, a 3G or a 6G.
