over drive button

how is every one tonight??
a while back my OD light would flash on and off till it finally went out..OD button still worked so didn't really mess with it. I figured it was in the column..well yesterday the OD button stopped working,,still shifts into OD but I cant shut it off to come out of OD..today I picked up a new shift lever with the OD button for 50 bucks..how much work is it to change it out?? and what tools will i need other then the standard? thanks guy's

I had my OD light flashing intermittently and the fix for me was the ABS sensor on the rear differential. You can order it from napaonline.com for about $10 - in store will charge you more. just an fyi in case the shift-lever replacement doesn't fit the problem.

this was a shorting out flashing... not a bad sensor flash..I have AE and there is no codes..the light has been out for over 2 moths now and has always shifted fine..so I'm sure its in the steering column thanks for the reply...

i bet when you get the old shifter out you will notice the wires are cut right where they come out of the shifter. mine did the same thing, the wires were just brittle and broke. truck still shifted into overdrive and all but i couldn't take it in and out of overdrive with the button. its an easy fix.

Ron I had the same problem a while back.
This should get you going:

Unscrew the tilt lever
Remove the lower cover.
There is a pin you must press in at the bottom of the ignition switch. It gets exposed when you remove the lower cover. There is a button that must be depressed with the key in the unlock posistion.
Then the whole cylinder pops out.
Then the top cover will pop off, and you can get to the stalk. it has a taper pin in it Tap pin with hammer & punch to loosen.
Unplug the connector and re-install the new stalk or fix the old one.
Shave the upper colum cover to not chaff again

Hey ron the instructions you got are right on minus one thing. Before you unscrew the tilt, Lower the steeering wheel all the way. Otherwise it is almost imposible to get the upper collar plastic off. If you lower the wheel all the way you do not have to remove the dash at all. I just did this change out last month. Should take you about 20 min.

hey guy's thank you for you help..the instruction you all gave me and the pics Alan sent helped me a lot..after getting it apart I see that this wasn't the 1st time it has happened..I see the wires were covered with black tape..I unraveled it to see it had hit on the wheel cover before.. the wires were twisted back together and taped..I shaved the cover just a bit.. then I got some air line from my fish tank in the house and made a slit in it to slide the wire into it and help protect it..every thing seems to be ok as far as the OD now..but I found a another problem that I will start a new post for...once again FTE and you good folks helped me fix my own truck and saved me some money.......thanks again guys..

Sounds more like VSS problem than what Ron had.
