New Mod

I ordered a SCT tuner for my truck today. I got it from Troyer Performance. They have the Excaliber 1 on sale for $295. I've had a custom chip from Troyer since 03. It works good but it has to use 93 octane. I want to be able to run regular when I go on long trips. I'm ordering the tuner with a 93 octane performance tune ,a 93octane tow performance & a 87 tow performance tune. I like the SCT because of the custom tuning that works with your other performance mods.

What do you need as a tuning device? Is it LAPTOP, or a special unit?

I keep a SONY VAIO in my toolbox at work.

Its a programer with 3 custom programs designed to work with the other mods I have like the headers, intake & bigger throddle body. This shop burned the custom chip I have now. With a programmer you can adjust shift points or take the trans tuning out if you add a shift kit. It also reads trouble codes. It just gives me more options. SCT is supposed to be the best programmers for Fords. It can be updated by email with different tunes.

Wish mine had more settings, but it's the first generation, works good running ethonol though. Wonder if your truck will run better with less trouble codes removing that custom chip.

I don't think my codes are caused by the chip. My evap system has caused almost all of them. A fuel pressure senser of the evap system shorted out & fried my computer. A chip would affect the engine control parts of the ecu not the evap system.

Whatever happened to the good old days of spread bores, and tunnel rams?

I want that ability sooner or later.

The tuner kids have programs for their laptops to plug in and adjust while running, has to be a similar setup to do custom burns, but I'd rather adjust it on the vehicle, seems to take out the guess work. The Tuner me and Howard have is just a handheld, much like the scanner the guys at the auto parts stores have, the laptop program takes training to know what you're doing, ours are preset programs loaded in from the company.

Mark the tuner I'm buying is different from yours. It uses custom tunes designed around your mods. It has a optional part you can buy to hook the tuner to your home computer. With it you can update the tuner with from emails from SCT. Its a handheld unit with many more features than the Schip 1715. It can be used to store data like your air/fuel ratio & other engine controls at different engine speeds After you gather the info you send the unit back to SCT & they can burn the perfect tune for your motor. I can't wait for it to get here.
