How does the Dmax make so much power?

I was reading this thread:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...ull-added.html

and now I wonder how they do it.
Big injectors? Or is the piezo injector design flexible enough to enable someone to just open up the pulse width and make 1000 HP on diesel #2 only like that?

Good question, Kwik......And stock, they're STILL more powerful than the new 6.4L (marginally, but still)......

There was a dyno sheet floating around not too long ago with a Duramax LBZ and a 6.4. The duramax made a stock run of 310 hp and 557 torque. The 6.4 had high 278-ish but was at low to mid 600's in torque. These #'s are from memory so might be slightly off. Wish I could find that dyno sheet.

I think it's just the ability to tune the common rail system. The CP3 pumps, tuning, injectors, and turbos that are available really have brought out the beast in these engines. Saw something a while back where Gale Banks commented about the LLY and said that it was the most advanced diesel engine compared to the Cummins and Powerstroke. That's why he chose that engine for his Sidewinder (or whatever he calls it) racing project.

I'll still sacrifice power to have an american diesel. Do you really need 1000hp on the street?

Even though I'm not American, Amen to that!! More people need to buy from American industries before everything is imported and the economy is in the trash and half the folks are out looking for jobs. At least the truck is American though, even if the engine isn't. It's good to have imported goods and companys, but no to the point the local companys are in bad shape.

(MODS: If this is too political juist delete it)

I have a Duramax 06 EC SB, it is almost like driving a 69 SS 396 Nova. I am buying the Banks kit also, I don't NEED it but I want it.

To me the Duramax is like driving a car. When I want to drive a truck I use my 99 F250.

This is exactly the reason GM is and always has been behind the others when making a truck larger than the 1/2ton. There 3500's are lighter and meant to be more like a "car". That's why I don't and won't own a junkamax. I know the asian's have been known for making the simple systems we have better( more fuel efficient, more power from less cylinders) But I'm sorry the diesel was the brainchild of a european and it took a man named cummins to make it sensible for use in the everyday market here in this country and I don't feel the ones who are known for making everything smaller will make it better.

I don't want to offend the PS fans but I feel if you want a true diesel the cylinders better be in a line.

Hell no, but 990HP will do. I'm gettin there, slowly but surely. Of course, I have the backing of some fine credit card companies. ROFLMAO

I can put you behind the wheel of 825 horses of #2 burning power now 6L PWR, but it aint a ford, and it won't feel like all that power is there either, but it is!

You know, Dan, that I work on a lot of these things you call....um, Duramaxes.....cough, cough.

I can't exactly explain how or why the 'max makes the copious amounts of power that they are capable of. I mean, I've seen dyno day clips and dyno sheets of these short-stroke (<4") engines and it baffles me how they seem to effortlessly (with $$) make 1000+ HP and torque. I can definitely tell you that I've looked these things over thoroughly and have come up with this list of things that should LIMIT power.

1. Stock downpipe
The stock downpipe is a respectable 3.25" at the turbine outlet. However, it IMMEDIATELY makes a 90 degree turn into a square 2"x4" section of pipe that is about 18" long. The real killer is the very end of the downpipe that measures a whopping 2.875" ID. Talk about FLOW......NOT!!!

2. The exhaust manifolds are not much different than the other "log" style manifolds on the 7.3L or 6.0L. The up-pipes however each incorporate a convoluted expansion joint that sflow, and they're only 1.625" ID.

3. The intake manifold is even more poorly designed for direct, obstruction-free flow than our 7.3L ones are.

All in all, I do believe that the 'max is a far-superior design than any other of the light truck diesels out there. It still uses forged connecting rods, it has 4 valves per cylinder (like all of them now), it has had the ability to balance cylinders by individual cylinder injector flow since it came out in '01, and it makes great power for its displacement. Add to that the transmission it is hooked to and you've got a winner. Too bad it's ugly and rides like a car.
