If you have the intake off take a piece of wire with a half circle radius of app 2 1/2", install it into the coolant port in front of the head feeding down.
In the front it should hit the head gasket blocking the 3" long slit coolant port to the head, in the rear it should go thru into the the block thru the window in the head gasket.
Same on both the right and left head gasket.
If the head gaskets are installed azz backwards you'll overheat.
Awww Just be done and over with it..and install a 35gpm electric pump..and if any holes are blocked it'll unblock em..LOL.. and pick-up a few hp in the process!!
What, ported cooling?
I have a ported wallet seems the green go fast fuel just slips right out, a little congested in the install side, that needs porting and flow bench work big time.
Thanks to all you guys for the info, tips, and humor. This site is great! Spring's almost here and I have a huge checklist and things to try now in solving my over-heat problem.
When I get some answers and hopefully a solution, I'll be sure to let you know.

Yes it is all about having fun here. And once in a while we can even help someone out. LOL
Well, It's been a few weeks, but I said I'd get back to everyone on this, and I have good news!
I ordered the water pump impeller plate from Summit ($6), easy to install. But first I checked the flow-thru on my radiator, and it dumped out in no more than 2 seconds, so no problem there. Got it all buttoned back up with the plate on the water pump and have since driven it about 80 miles in varying traffic conditions, including slow and idling.
I am happy to report that the engine has never ran at such cool and even temps. I can't get it over 190 degrees on a hot day stopped in traffic! There is definitely something to the Flo Kooler impeller plate.
Hope this info can help some one else. Thanks again to all.
i had heard a tip to drill a small hole at top of the T-stat to let air pass thru to prevent overheating issues. i tried it on my 390 rebuild and she runs smoothly never over 180.
(my rebuild was last october and i dont have more than 100 miles on it)
Is it possible to have the intake gaskets on backwards?? When I put the intake back on my 390, it tends to run warm while sitting ... thats the only thing I can think of, it didnt use to.. same parts just new gaskets..
Thoughts???
Thanks! Sorry dont mean to Hijack somebodys thread but its on the same subject
