Got one for the techs

My dad has a 90 with 302, and the oil pump has quit. Fortunately he has run synthetic for ever but what my question is, do you have to pull the engine out or can you just loosen the motor mounts and t case x member and raise it up enough to change it out?

Just want to know what I need to plan for.

Thanks

I'm not a tech, just about 1/4 shade tree. You did not mention you know original oil pressure gauge is junk. Have you put a mechanical gauge on it to be sure?

Yes I did check the pressure. It is not even registering on the gauge. Plus it sound horrible, like a sewing machine. I can't stand to start it again either.

Apparantly it can be done with the motor in the truck. Very painful and difficult from what i understand, and you will probably have to take the upper intake off to get the motor to go up far enough to get the pan out. After that its still located above the engine cross member. Good luck.

I think it would probably be easier to just pull the engine out vs. taking off the whole intake.

If it sounds like a sewing machine and won't start again - you should probably be checking out more than the oil pump. Bearings and journals can be checked for scoring as well as the rods, crank and pistons. Better to catch it before it goes too far.

Not the whole intake, just the upper half. Its six bolts and one gasket that most likely will be reusable. Its harder to pull the motor than it is to pull the upper intake. Also if this truck is a manual tranny, then getting it back in without pulling the tranny and installing them together is almost impossible. I said to hell with that when i put a new motor in my 92 F150 and pulled the tranny and dropped them in together. He also mentioned that he doesnt want to start it again because it knocks so bad, not that it wont start again.

My mistake TDV - but still - if it sounds like a sewing machine when it starts....

Sewing machine sound could still be the lifters ticking because there is no oil pressure. Its also rare that the oil pump to just suddenly fail. I would pull the distributor to see how many pieces the oil pump driveshaft is in. If its broke, the pan still has to come off to fix it and while you're there, do the pump also. If it is broke though, the pieces will probably fall into the bottum of the pan and thats not the greatest either.

I know from what my dad tells me that the pressure gauge has been in and out for a while so he replaced the sending unit. I guess for once the gauge was right. It was only running for a short time sounding like a singer.

Like i said, its rare for the oil pump to up and quit, so I would pull the distributor to see what you are dealing with.
