My dealership has an 04' 4dr short bed PSD w/ 44,000 mi on it, its a Lariat with pretty much every option except the sunroof. It already has the 4" exhaust and gauges. They are asking $20,500 for this truck. The guy that use to have it, bought it wrecked at 24,000 mi, it only had damage to the left rear corner. It was fixed by a respectable body shop with all new Ford parts. In March of 06 it got a new EGR valve, in Jan 07 it got new EGR, new Headgaskets, and heads planed. The kicker is it has a salvage title, and therefore no warranty. The guy traded it because his machine shed burnt and lost his tractors and chore truck and had to have something to chore with, so he traded it on a cab and chassis. The no warranty on the 6.0 engine really worries me, but i thought i would ask you guys opinion before i kicked the idea. Just wondering if you guys think this is a good deal or to much of a risk. Thanks for the advice, you guys are awesome.
Maryville;
Interesting considering the reliabilty reports were released today as per the Associated Press: "...reliabilty of cars from Detroit...Chrsyler posted the lowest score of 51...GM recieved a 57...[and]...Ford's score was 64."
Now I'll admit the Japanese all had the best records for reliabilty, but remeber the Tundra's track record for recalls?...That model beat out all the Dodge, Ford and GM trucks...they just didn't compile their recall data untill after Jan. 1.
I probably wouldn't have bought our '04 6.0L Excursion if it didn't have the warranty. In the 8 months we've owned it, the warranty has 'saved' us thousands of $$$...and counting.
Even if you get it insured, You can expect minimal payout if anything ever happens to it.
The salvage title hurts it more than the 6.0 ever could. Probably should only carry liability
insurance
Most banks won't finance it. I've bought salvage items before always at large discounts
over clean titles of the same item. RESALE is very low.
IMO salvage is a good way to get cheap desposable tool. 20K ain't cheap! 10-12K is probably close to real value, respecially if you totaled it.
I would pass on the basis that its a 4 model year old truck with no warranty and a salvage title. I would be more inclined to see what kind of deal I could wrangle on a leftover 06 or 07, more money for sure but you'd have warranty, better financing, no salvage title, better resale, 40,000 less miles and a never molested engine or body.
Well bczolone,
Are we talking about and I am quoting now "reliablilty of cars from Detroit" here? I don't think so. This is not a car so I don't care how much more reliable Jap cars compared to Detroit's cars. Thanks for that info though, it may come in handy someday.
It included light trucks..."...and light trucks..." I neglected to include that along with a lot of other semantics I assumed too much of the readers ability to understand...and I have had multiple problems with mine, but with cars...er trucks...its been my expericence that its really luck of the draw when it comes to brand, and motor. My friends 2002 7.3L has had easily 3 times as many motor problems as my 6.0L in the same amount of miles.
I would leave that one be. Most states won't even insure a salvaged vehicle and if something were to go wrong then you are stuck because if you were to try and sell it or trade it you would run into people asking the same question as you are asking here. I would definitely look elsewhere. I only paid 29,000 for my 04 6.0 and I don't see where that small of a difference would be worth it
i just bought my 04 8 months ago with 94,000 miles,now 104,000 miles and runs and looks brand new, i dont believe the 6.0 is that bad at all, just look around and see how many (hundreds of thousands) are on the road with 100,200,300,000 miles on them, no mods ,no problems.
All good advise, also why did it blow the headgaskets and have gauges unless the engine had a tuner or chip. I would not buy that truck if it was half that price.
