So about a week ago the airbag light started flashing in my 05 f 150 it flashes 4 times then 2 times (42). i think it might be something to do with the passanger side because it seems like i've always had problems with the seatbelt chime going off even when both people were buckled
any ideas???
The following is based on the 2004 workshop manual. It is very likely to be the same as the 05.
First off, working on the airbag system can be dangerous. Do not do anything without the proper instructions and without taking the mandatory safety precautions.
Lamp Fault Code (LFC) 42 indicates the Restraints Control Module (RCM) has detected an electrical fault with the front impact severity sensor. This is not an issue with your passenger side seat belts.
The restraints control module (RCM) checks all of the impact sensor circuits for faults. If the RCM detects one of the following faults on any of the impact sensor circuits, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2296 in memory and flash lamp fault code (LFC) 42 (or higher priority code if one exists) on the air bag indicator.
Fault Conditions
The RCM monitors for the following fault conditions:
low resistance.
high resistance or circuit open.
circuit short to voltage.
circuit short to ground.
Possible Causes
A impact sensor fault can be caused by:
damaged wiring, terminals, or connectors.
a faulty impact sensor.
incorrect sensor mounting.
a faulted RCM.
The sensor at issue is mounted on the latch support bracket.
Before dinking with ANY components of the SRS, disconnect the battery negative cable and wait at least one minute for the SRS backup power supply to discharge.
I'd suggest checking the sensor mounting surface for rust or corrosion. Disconnect the sensor's connector and inspect it for corrosion. Reconnect it and make certain it is secure.
The service manual gives specific tests to be performed to properly pinpoint the fault. You would need it in order to properly diagnose the fault beyond what I've already offered.
Since you have a 5 yr 50K warranty on the AIRBAG system you should not mess with it at all unless you have already consumed that warranty mileage. Let the dealer take care of it free.
Hi, new member here and this is my first post. I have this exact same problem with an 03 Expedition. Just wondering if yours got resoved and what did you do?
I will try cleaning the contacts and see if that helps.
