Question @ 4.6L with 3.55 diff ratio

I have been shopping around and found a very nice '06 SCAB 4X4 XLT. I like the truck but concerned that it has a 4.6L with a 3.55 diff. I will be using this for mostly for expressway cruising and don't anticipate any towing. The power seemed OK for what I need (as much as I could tell with a salesman in the truck). Was wondering if anyone knows if this combo turns sluggish with a moderate load or on rolling hills/expressway grades?

I have an 07 2wd with the 4.6L and the 3.55 ratio. I drive mostly highway(800mi a week) and this combination has worked good for me. I did a lot of reading on it and it seems for hwy driving this is a good choice.

4.6/355

Hi my last vehicle was a 99 Expedition with the same set up....I added a K&N F.I.P.K. and was good for about 15 mpg around town....now if my 07 Super Crew was as good. My towing if much was generally limited to smallish loads however my utility trailer had a set up of plywood I could place inside te rails and carry pea gravel or sand...once did haul asquare of brick on my 5x10....it did well I did know it was behind me on a down hill run ....

I had a 2005 STX SCab 4X4 w/ the 4.6/3.55 setup. For what you are using your truck for, it will work fine. You should get fairly good mileage for these trucks. None of them get what you would call good gas mileage, but you should get about as good as possible over the road with that setup. The 4.6 is a sweet running engine, but is a bit under powered for such a heavy truck. I was happy with mine.

i had a 4.6 in my last truck....it was a 2001 and it was 5 speed and when i towed my quads on the trailer i could tell they were back there the entire time...ESPECIALLY on hills...then it slowed down big time.....thats why i got the 5.4 L now...

but, if all your doing is highway driving then that should be great for MPG...

I've had 2 4.6 F150's, a 98 and 03. Power output on both of these was less then the 06 your looking at. Each of these trucks worked well. Nope they aren't the fastest, but they surely get the job done. Plus 4.6 2V has a long life reputation, without some of the hassles the 5.4 3V's seem to have (or at least that's what I've read, my 5.4 3V is too new to say).

Figure it this way, can you get a deal you'll be happy with on this truck and you like it? Then I wouldn't hesitate, but if you think your going to need more power to be happy, seek out the 5.4. Just my 2 cents.

Good luck

All I can say is that our '05 SCrew has the 281 and 3.73's, and I wouldn't want any taller gearing. Maybe I spent too much time in my Mustang, but it just seems like the 281/3.73 combo is about what I'd expect from a truck, and 3.55's would make it agonizingly flat-footed.

That said, for an engine as small as the 281, it'll do a lot of work...

Thumbs up

My brother in law runs a farm/packing house in south Texas and beats his 4.6 trucks without mercy, and he's happy with them.

His workers are not the kindest people with his stuff.
