manifold to headers

alright so im sure there's some one else on here who is tirred of hearing there manifold leak. i got the gasketreplaced on the passenger side, and then a couple weekslater my driver side started leaking and now they're both leaking. does anyone elsehave this proiblem? but myreal question is what are some good options for going with headersand how hard are they to install? i figure if im gonna drop the money on new manifolds i might as well just buy some decent headers. any input is greatly appreciated

If you can find headers that will work with your truck I say go for it, might even me cheaper than new manifolds...you'll gain a couple ponies and get a nice deep tone as well. Just keep in mind that you may have to have some welding done at an exhaust place to pipe everything together....all in all shouldnt be too hard on the pocket book.

I'm getting ready to put some headers on my 97. I've been poking around this site to get as much information a possible. The only thing holding me back is that I read that the right motor mount is in the way of a couple manifold bolts, which it is because I checked, and I've been looking for someone that has put manifolds or headers on to see how they delt with this problem.

I put headers on my 97. I jacked the motor up to put in those bolts. Its a tough job putting the headers on. It took me about 8 hrs. I pulled the fender liners to give access to the motor

I used JBA headers. They fit ok except for the EGR line. I had to bend it a little to make it fit. I gained some power but not as much as the long tubes I had on my last truck. The headers came with new studs & gaskets. I've put 60,000 miles on them with no leaks or problems. I'd use Dynomax long tubes if I was doing it again. Its a hard install but if you have the patience it can be done in a day.

Thanks for the info. I suppose the long tubes would require a custom exhaust? Do the short tubes fit inplace of manifold without exhaust mods?

The studs/bolts attaching the y pipe to the manifolds have rusted tot he point that they are as thins as a 30 amp fuse filament. I believe I will have to replace the manifolds just for those let alone anything else. Here is a link for headers I found. Dont know a thing about them so any input would be appreciated. The headers are not pictured. One link s for black the other is for armour cout (silver).

The other options is a set of cheapies from e-bay. Anybody have experience with those 30 dollar manifolds?

Don't buy cheap headers. They will not last. The Doug Thorleys are a good brand. I have shorty headers now & they bolt to the existing pipes

Thanks lariat for the input. I guessing you removed the 13mm bolts from the bracket bolted to the engine block and then jacked the motor up a little bit?

lariat97's right-inexpensive or lesser quality headers that aren't designed with trucks and towing in mind will crack, and leak in a short time. Towing is hard on manifolds and headers due to higher than typical exhaust gas temps under heavy load,so you need thick tubing and flanges if you expect them to last-otherwise the metal will burn out and fail.Typically they crack and warp pretty quick.
